Hall of Fame Spotlight

Pirates Week presenter Ragnar Daneskjold has launched a new programme called Hall of Fame Spotlight looking at some of the US pirates.

On his website he writes: "I know that many of you have been missing the piratesweek, and I have been asked by a bunch of you when I was bringing it back. Well, I may be doing that later this year but right now I am announcing a new show.

"I will be on WBCQ Area 51 following Allan Weiner Worldwide with my brand new show the Hall of Fame Spotlight. Allan usually wraps up his show around 9:15 pm Eastern or so and then I’ll be on after him, 5110 khz on WBCQ.

"I’ll also will be hosting the new shows a couple days later on Sunday mornings on piratesweek.info and they will be up on this feed.

So tune into WBCQ, Area 51, 5110 kHz Friday nights a little after 9pm eastern and catch the Hall of Fame spotlight where we will be taking an in depth look at some of the best pirate shortwave radio has to offer.

Global pirate HF weekend

This weekend is the latest pirate radio weekend with stations hoping for long distance reception on the higher frequencies. It is co-ordinated by Finnish DXer Harri. The last one in November was a big success with reception reported around the world.

Look out for stations between 15.005 - 15.095 mHz and 21.450 - 21.550 mHz tomorrow and Sunday.

Dutch commercial stations applaud higher pirate fines

The Association of Commercial Radio Stations (VCR) is satisfied with the higher penalty of up to 45,000 euros for radio pirates recently announced by Radiocommunications Agency Netherlands.

A specific category of radio pirates, especially in the provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe, use increasingly taller transmission towers and higher power. National and regional broadcasters are regularly disturbed by these ‘air guns’ says the VCR. “This is mainly because the pirates operate their transmission equipment on or around the FM frequencies of legal stations.”

“These pirates often consist of teams of 20, 30 or even more people. With such a large team, a small fine makes no impression,” says the VCR. “Commercial radio stations annually spend millions of euros on their broadcasting activities. An undisturbed FM reach is crucial for these stations. If their FM coverage is limited by an illegal broadcaster, the economic loss is significant.”

Radar Serbia Radio is planning to start on 48 mb !!! Then it would be the first international SW-station from Serbia (Radar is also using frequencies between 1600 - 1800 kHz, but not often because it is overcrowded in SE Europe)!

Dutch FM pirates to face €45,000 fines

As of mid-December, Radiocommunications Agency Netherlands will increase the penalty for illegal use of the FM band to a maximum of €45,000. Also over the Christmas period, additional inspectors will be employed to prevent nuisance from radio pirates.

The penalty will vary from case to case depending on the severity of the offence. This is determined by the degree of interference that the pirate transmitter causes to legitimate broadcasts. Besides the higher penalty, the Radiocommunications Agency will adopt a policy of giving the offender a one hour warning to switch off the transmitter. If the offender fails to comply, an inspector will officially report the violation, and the offender will consequently risk a penalty.

The Radiocommunications Agency has recently noticed a change in the type of radio piracy, which has moved away from so-called “attic pirates” (hobbyists), and now increasingly involves larger pirates operating in conjunction with music events. They use powerful transmitters with higher antenna masts, which means they can cover a wider area and can cause more disruption. The Radiocommunications Agency also sees an increase in the number of mobile masts that can be controlled remotely from a studio. This type of mast is often used in broadcasts from restaurants, party tents and marquees.
