MP takes up fight against pirate radio station

An MP has taken up the fight to stop a pirate radio station stealing the airwaves from a popular Greek radio station in Haringey (North London).

Listeners of London Greek Radio are frustrated by interruptions from pirate radio station dost.fm illegally broadcasting on a nearby frequency.

After “endless” complaint letters Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone met with regulator the Office for Communication (Ofcom) to discover what action is being taken to shut down the pirate broadcasters.

Chris Stylianou, manager of Cypriot Community Centre in Earlham Road, Wood Green, said: “A lot of people have been complaining about not being able to listen to the station. Anything that interferes with other stations should be shut down. It is not right, simple as that.”

Since January Ofcom has taken out 18 enforcement actions to stop dost.fm broadcasting, which resulted in 22 days of downtime since March.

The MP was told by Ofcom that radio piracy hits Haringey particularly hard as close to a third of the capital’s pirate stations are located within the borough.

Pirate uses silent Sky Radio frequency in SE Drenthe

A pirate radio station in south east Drenthe (The Netherlands) made good use of the radio silence over the weekend caused by the collapse of the tower at Hoogersmilde last Friday. After many stations went off the air, the pirates took over the frequency of Sky Radio to broadcast their own playlist.

According to the pirate station, the collapse of the mast was a perfect opportunity to play music never heard on Sky Radio: schlagers and ‘pirate hits’. To make it sound authentic, the pirate station used Sky Radio jingles. The pirates have now stopped their actions to allow the real Sky Radio to return to the air in the region.

Rinse FM rapped over use of F-word

London community radio station Rinse FM has been found in breach of the Ofcom code for repeatedly broadcasting songs featuring the F-word.
The station – which targets 15 to 24 year olds with an interest in urban music – hadn’t apologised on air following a ten-minute period that included five uses of the expletive.
A listener, parent to a 12 year old boy, complained to Ofcom about the prevalence of offensive language in songs broadcast by the station, giving the afternoon of 30 March 2011 as an example when her son had been listening.

The inside story of a pirate station's success

In 1985, KISS FM had been just one of many illegal pirate radio stations in London playing black music that had been largely ignored by licensed broadcasters. By 1989, KISS FM had won an FM radio licence to broadcast legally to the whole of London, having fought off dozens of competing bids from some of the biggest names in broadcasting and industry. By 1991, KISS FM was attracting an audience of one million listeners a week, making it one of the most successful radio station launches in British broadcasting history.

The inside story of how a small London pirate radio station was transformed into one of Britain’s most successful youth brands is uncovered in this book. KISS FM’s remarkable trajectory was the culmination of a long-running campaign for a black music radio station in London that had been started in 1970 by soul music pirate station Radio Invicta. Also documented in this book is the determination of the government and commercial radio industry to rid Britain forever of pirate radio, and the abject failure of their desperate efforts.

News from Britain Radio Int

I have had an email from Roger Davis of Britain Radio International. The station, which first started broadcasting  31 years ago, hasn't been on the air for some time but Roger hopes to return at some stage.

He writes: "I am pleased to say that BRI has not closed down for good, at some stage I will hopefully make some sort of comeback to the SW airwaves, one of the reasons we found it difficult to maintain our regular 2nd/4th Sundays was the loss of JRR relay, Laser Hot Hits kindly stepped in to offer assistance for which we were very grateful and the offer still stands for BRI to be relayed via their TXs, but although I have every intention to bring the station back in some shape or form its unlikely to happen in the immediate future."

He says any return will be announced on the BRI website which has been updated.

He concludes: "Send my best wishes to all the loyal listeners who have supported BRI over the past 31 years... BRI will return in the not too distant future."

FRS Holland this Sunday

On Sunday (June 19th) FRS-Holland will be on air with full programming. Opposite to our usual broadcasts, this one will take place in the evening hours between 16:52- 22:00 UTC/ 18:52- 24:00 CEST.
FRS-Holland will be on 7685kHz avoiding 7600 and 7595 interference during the first part of the broadcast.
7685 isn't affected by adjacent channels being used by other stations. Especially during the last part of the broadcast it will be interesting if & how signals will be received to the east (Russia, Ukraine etc.).
We will take our time...it'll be an 'old fashioned' long FRS broadcast: 5 hours!!. Our full staff will be involved including Paul Graham who was absent for quite some time. This time we will deviate from the usual schedule: 3 blocks of resp. 60s, 70s and 80s tracks, a DX Show and a show with mostly tunes. We will handle no letters, there's no Phrase that Pays, the music comes first! Although each show will include 1 or 2 short radio related items !

We like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you who responded to our brief evening tests May 22nd (7685).
These two 15 min. tests were widely heard across Europe and beyond. For 30 minutes we received some 30 reports.
And last but not least: we will soon start replying to the many, many listeners who responded to one or more of our 30th Anniversary broadcasts back in October & November 2010 and February 2011.
FRS has produced a special & informative commemorative 30th Anniversary booklet which will be available to each and everyone who sent a report/ letter. This booklet is almost finished. So please have a little more patience, you will get your special QSL card(s) and the booklet.

Pirate Radio Annual 2011

Top FM pirate stations in London

"All Crews author Brian Belle Fortune lists his top ten pirate radio stations...

Knowledge (magazine) asked me to compile a list of top ten pirates most influential to the jungle / drum & bass scene. Where do you start? How do you choose? Lists are often difficult since they're highly subjective. People tend to big up a station as it's the one they've always listened to - even if only out of habit. Does longevity rule over cultural significance? Or are the best stations the ones which broadcast passion, music and vibes, attracting and retaining an extremely loyal following?

The best stations weave compulsive musical webs through our lives. Switch on and magic floods out your speakers. The underground music we know and love would never of reached the global prominence it has without the support of the pirates.

Most listeners will be unaware of all the shenanigans involved in keeping a pirate radio station on air. Government agents from Ofcom whose search and destroy mission it is target illegal broadcasters, admit a certain admiration for pirates: "It's not easy to set up a station and broadcast, yet they achieve it, week in, week out."

Radio Caroline features in the top 10, while the rest are from the urban/dance music scene in London from the early pioneers in the 1980s up to today. There is video and clips from some of these stations.
