Dutch pirate Radio Osaka 'forced' to close down

Hello All Free Radio Friends!

I had also the honour, personally being handed over the letter from Dutch Telecom Agency, presented to me on Thursday, 2013.08.01 13:42.

Two "officials" a man and woman came at my door. The question came to me directly... did I disturbed? No that wasn't the case, but they got a call from "someone," who told them, I was on-air almost every day,  so no problems by neighbours etc. I just was above ground level.

The Telecom-woman, was in training, so...The Telecom Agency people were very gentle. I could stay on-air till 15 hrs - probably to prevent escalation.

I 've been on-air in a few years time, where others do maybe this in 10 or more years time! I 've enjoyed the time being! There wasn't any confiscation of equipment etc. So before the story goes "wild" this is what happened. Quick and neat.

So keep a low profile for some time.. you have been warned! I wish you all a nice week end! Be calm and keep on "fighting" for free radio!

Israeli army weighs military action against pirate radio stations

It is not on the agenda for peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority that began yesterday in Washington, but it is a major problem that may have to be solved by force rather than simply by negotiations.

Earlier this week, Israel said it might take military action to halt broadcasts from pirate radio stations operating in the West Bank. The reference to military action came after two days when radio stations in the West Bank caused severe disruption to radio transmissions between Ben Gurion airport control tower and aircraft in the area.

The Israeli communications ministry says the Palestinian Authority is doing nothing to prevent illegal radio stations from operating. The ministry has filed an official complaint with the authority in the vain hope that it will solve the problem.

On Sunday, officials at Ben Gurion airport said interruptions to communication from the broadcasts forced the tower to open greater intervals between flights, disrupting the flight schedule.

Israeli sources say the pirate radio stations operate mainly from the Ramallah area, in contravention of a series of agreements.

“The Palestinian Authority ignores the problem,” says one Israeli source.

Ben Gurion Airport uses a portion of the FM band for communication with incoming and outgoing aircraft and Israeli radio stations are banned from using those frequencies.

Pirate radio stations in Israel that have disrupted aviation have been closed. Operators have faced heavy fines and some have been jailed.

Israeli sources emphasise that if all other means fail, the Israeli army will locate the stations and shut them down by force. “This is an act of terror that can cost in lives,” says one.

The exact location of the pirate radio stations is known so the military option could be adopted immediately.

Pirate Radio Thrives in Internet Age

Unlicensed “pirate” radio stations are thriving in the Internet age, despite the fact that most people can now operate their own Web-based radio stations without risking arrest.

“A vibrant pirate radio scene continues in the United States, and also in Europe and to a lesser extent in South America,” said George Zeller, a pirate radio listener/journalist for the past four decades.

“This includes a very energetic pirate radio scene on shortwave, and also a stunningly resilient pirate radio scene on FM and to a lesser extent on medium wave, despite the frequent busts by the FCC of FM pirates.”

Less raids for pirate radio stations

Either there are less pirate radio stations around these days, or they are getting smarter by not getting caught.
Ofcom raids on ‘pirate’ radio stations have more than halved in number over the past five years, according to figures released under the Freedom of Information Act, and seen by RadioToday.
The previously unpublished data reveals that the number of operations conducted by Ofcom against illegal broadcasters fell from 927 in 2007 to 431 in 2012, with only 39 operations conducted outside London last year.
The number of successful convictions for illegal broadcasting dropped from 37 in 2007 to just seven in 2012. The average fine fell to £225, and average costs awarded down to £350. The maximum penalties that can be imposed at Crown Court are an unlimited fine and two years in prison.

However the number of complaints about interference from pirates also reduced, from 535 in 2010 to 324. Last year saw 67 complaints from licensed broadcasters, including community and RSL stations; and 256 from listeners.

According to the Ofcom data, the last occasion where a pirate endangered ‘safety of life’ was in September 2010, affecting London’s air traffic control centre in Swanwick, Hampshire.
More recently, an incident in 2012 at London City Airport was initially classified as having affected safety of life, but was subsequently downgraded. In total, 42 of last year’s incidents involved aeronautical equipment, while two affected the emergency services.

The figures highlight Ofcom’s struggle to permanently close down illegal stations. One station in London – Shine FM, broadcasting on 87.9FM - was raided 20 times in 2012.
Twelve further stations were raided ten or more times in the year: Blazin FM, déjà vu FM, House FM, Klick, Kool FM, Lightning FM, On Top FM, Origin FM, Playback, TSOL, Vibes FM and WBLS FM.
In total across the year, Ofcom’s operations included 13 raids on studios, and 148 seizures of the main illegal transmitter.
