There are lots of stations on Saturdays and Sundays at present: maybe we are heading towards the winter when shortwave reception is generally better in Europe and more free radio stations operate. You know, I was going through some old copies of Anoraks UK Weekly Report this morning: there are actually more shortwave pirates today than there were in 1986, in an era when there was much more AM and FM free radio activity in Britain and Ireland.
ReplyDeleteTrue, back then 30 stations was a big deal. Lots of Irish stations in those days, now sadly next to none
ReplyDeleteYes, a sad decline in the Irish Free Radio scene. I do log the Irish "super-pirate" Reflections Europe on 6295 kHz most Sundays from around 15:00. I call them a super-pirate because they seem to go on forever without harrassment! But I never listen because it's all the fundamentalist religious stuff that originates in the US.... I suppose it brings back memories of Radio Luxembourg, and Caroline's "Viewpoint 963" service back in the 1980's.
ReplyDeleteI used to love the Irish pirates back in the middle 1980's. Sunshine on 531 kHz used to just get to Bristol, and along with Caroline 558 and Laser on 576 kHz made for much happy listening when I was growing up.
I discovered the shortwave free radio scene in 1987, and remember Radio Rainbow (Eire), Radio East Coast Commercial, Free Medway Town Radio, Spectrum Leisure Communications and dozens more.
I am not sure why there are not more Irish pirates still active on shortwave. As I understand, despite the 1988 anti-pirate legislation, the Irish authorities are still relatively nonchalant about unlicensed radio stations, particularly on AM bands.
