So many pointless Dutch stations - Stove Farmer, I mean, what the - and relayed internet stations. Listenable free radio is all but dead.

  2. There's still a few around doing proper shows .... Focus, Pandora, Merlin, Bogusman/The Ghoul, FRS Holland among others. Pandora is on tonight although reception in SW England isn't great

The most annoying stations are the ones that play hours of rubbish music, no ID, and then switch off. What's the point of that??

Who wants to listen to a relayed FM station from Tenerife? The presenters on Laser seem to think they are far more interesting and talented than they actually are. Time to listen to yourselves and call it a day, I would say.

  5. Free Radio is what it is - unregulated.. so you will get all sorts of programming. I, for one, do not mind whether it is endless music, "proper" programming or relays of internet stations. As long as there is free radio, I will keep listening and continue to get hours of pleasure and make new friends. Long may it continue...

  6. Hear, hear! It is still better than commercial radio in the UK

The dross have moved in since the golden-era of WMR, Live Wire, Subterranean, Armadillo et al gave up the ghost. Even WNKR was better than listening to the top 40 on Coast FM!

  8. There will always be those who 'just want to be on the radio' and are happy to emulate what they hear on legal commercial stations, or just play some CDs for a while.

Many years ago, I myself 'just wanted to be on the radio'. I have changed since then (I hope)! I have been fortunate in having been exposed to Free Radio folk who have the desire and the ability to offer a genuine alternative to legal commercial stations.

My time on an offshore station helped to broaden my music knowledge & taste, and offered me the chance to develop as a presenter. I realise I am incredibly lucky to have had that experience. Most people don't get that opportunity and freedom.

Bogusman made the point, many years ago: "What's the point of making the effort to put a station on air, only to copy what others are doing?"

This point is quite valid, in my view. However, Free Radio as a hobby is just as valid, like collecting bus tickets or train numbers. It doesn't have to be a passion.

  9. Interesting points there GWL. I remember listening in the 80s and there seemed to be more proper programmes and less of the non-stop music that a lot of free radio is today. It would be good for the broadcasters to interact with the listeners more (and I don't mean via Iann's pirate chat, which many seem to use rather than using their mics!)

How do you interact with a station being relayed that doesn't actually realise it is being so? Relays, ID jingles (but nobody seemingly behind the mic) and repeats of Offshore repeats serve no purpose whatsoever, other than to keep Terry entertained.
