Bristol Wireless Pirate Radio Talk

Bristol Wireless will be hosting a fascinating talk on UK Pirate Radio in the 1960’s and 70’s on Wednesday 14th Jan at 8pm in The Zoo Bar, St Werburghs Community Centre, Bristol.

Our Treasurer Julien Weston will be talking of how and why the pirate stations came about, their fascinating and ongoing conflict with the UK government and the draconian measures the government eventually took to get the North Sea broadcasters off the air once and for all.

The talk will feature original sounds from many of the pirate stations and stunning images from the North Sea. Julien tells us his talk will cover the ships, the transmitters, the music, the people – and unfortunately, the authorities.

The Bristol Wireless bar will be open on the evening for your refreshment with all proceeds going to the Bristol Wireless project. The talk will last for one hour with plenty of time for questions and answers afterwards.

THE BRISTOL WIRELESS PIRATE RADIO TALK The Zoo Bar (Room 3), St Werburghs Community Centre, Horley Road, St Werburghs, BRISTOL BS2 9TJ, Wednesday 14th Jan, 8-9pm.

Pirate radio woman found guilty

A 42 year old woman from Dudley (near Birmingham in the West Midlands), who was a key member of a pirate radio station, has been handed a conditional discharge by Dudley Magistrates.

Tracey Louise Sarah Bond, of Beech Green, was given the three year conditional discharge, as well as being ordered to pay £2,000 costs, after being found guilty of helping to run the unlicensed radio station.

'Kriss FM' had been illegally broadcasting throughout the Walsall area on 95.3MHz since 1999 and was the subject of repeated intervention by Ofcom, following a high numbers of complaints from listeners of BBC Radio WM, who could not hear the station due to interference from the pirate show.

In January 2008, Ofcom officers tracked the illegal transmission to a house in Dudley, where they found the radio studio base.

Five months later, in June that year, officers issued a search warrant at the home of Bond, where they found a number of significant items associated with the radio station, including paperwork, a DJ schedule and a series of adverts for the station.

Following the sentencing, an Ofcom spokesman said: "Pirate radio is a significant problem in the UK's major urban areas. Safety of life services - ambulance, fire, police and air traffic control services - as well as licensed radio stations can suffer interference from these illegal stations.

"We monitor the airwaves 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and work closely with the police to crackdown on the problem. This involves raiding studios and taking them off air, seizing equipment and bringing the culprits to court."

Two pirates shut down

Two pirate radio stations in Huddersfield, England, have been raided and shut down.

Ofcom officials pulled the plug on Vibes and Frontline, which broadcast urban music. The two stations, which had to move premises frequently to avoid being caught, were tracked down by the communications industry regulator to adjacent properties in Almondbury on Wednesday.

A 21-year-old woman was arrested. Larry Stoddart, who was one of the pioneers of pirate radio in Huddersfield in the early 1990s, said about £5,000 or £6,000 of equipment, including transmitters, turntables and amplification equipment, was seized.

He said: “Without pirate radio, it’s going to be a very sour Christmas. “These are the only stations providing music that a lot of people want to listen to. Thousands of people listen to pirate radio. If they are using public money to hound pirate radio, it’s a total waste.”

The stations, which operated on FM frequencies 90.6 and 94.7, mainly played reggae, R ‘n’ B and soul and had been running for about four years. They transmitted primarily at weekends and survived thanks to revenue from advertising by small businesses and promoters of club nights.

The man behind Vibes, known only as ‘The General’, has been involved in pirate radio for 20 years and has become a cult figure in the scene.

He said: “I feel rotten about it to be honest. “We give the community up-to-date information about what’s going on and music that they want to listen to. We play what other radio stations aren’t playing.” But he vowed pirate radio would be back. “I’ve got plans,” he said.

Mr Stoddart, 45, said pirate radio helped to reach young people with important messages. He said: “Our main listeners are teenagers and we provide a lot of messages raising awareness of knife and gun crime, sexually transmitted infections and other issues. We are looking for some sort of legislation that would allow pirate radio to operate – maybe having one station per town or city. They say transmitting pirate radio could bring an aeroplane down, but so could a mobile phone.” He said there would be a campaign to bring pirate radio back.

An Ofcom spokesman said: “Ofcom can confirm that it has carried out a raid on two illegal pirate radio stations. Equipment was seized during the operation and is being retained as evidence. The investigation is ongoing.”

During 2008, Ofcom carried out 36 studio raids, secured 28 prosecutions and 14 formal cautions, removed 489 illegal transmitters and issued 74 written warnings to combat illegal broadcasting activities.

According to station's op, Radio "7800" are going to broadcast this Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 10 UTC (10-11CET) on 7800kHz.
Email to station: radio7800@wp.pl

Output power is 5W, but aerial seems to works properly so should be audible hundreds kilometers from their QTH, located somewhere in Northern Poland. Unfortunately annoing UTE sometimes makes problems on mentioned frequency.

Radio "7800" is not real name of this stations. This is my personal name of it because real name is not published yet or at least is not known for me.

Big L testing on 1395

The site of KBC Radio has photos of the (re-)installation work of the Dutch transmitter at Trintelhaven on 1395 kHz, which will carry the programmes of KBC and Big L. Work was carried out yesterday, and is apparently continuing today. Tests have now started. These tests are subject to interruption. It appears that the transmitter is not yet operating at full power.
