Radio Caroline back on medium wave

UK-based Radio Caroline will be broadcasting live from the radio ship Ross Revenge over the Bank Holiday weekend 28-31 August. This time, the station will also be broadcasting with low power on mediumwave 531 kHz, which should be audible in Tilbury and the surrounding areas of south Essex and north Kent.

This test broadcast is on the closest available frequency to the last one [558 kHz] used by the station to broadcast from international waters. The usual outlets via the Internet and Sky channel 0199 will also be carrying programmes from the Ross Revenge. More information go to the Radio Caroline website.

Atlantic 252 reunion

A reunion to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of Atlantic 252 is to be held in Trim, Ireland, on 12 September, and anyone who had any involvement in the longwave giant is invited. Organiser Enda Caldwell is hoping to get as many people from the station’s 12 year history to come along as possible, and would like to hear from you if you were involved.

It was originally to be a private event. Now it is open to the general public to attend in a conference setting to see and hear and meet the people who made Atlantic 252 one of the most successful Irish based radio stations in Europe.

I have graphed freq used, station activity, and pirate activity by month in 2009. Some interpretation was required to distinguish individual broadcasts and frequencies but the larger trends of activity can be easily identified. This database only contains logs from the FRW and is not to be considered definitive. I plan to maintain this project throughout 2009. Weekly updates occur on Monday or Tuesday. English MW pirate heard in Netherlands

Listeners in the Netherlands are reporting reception of Radio Albatross, an East Anglian pirate station, on 819 kHz. According to the operator of the station, the antenna is marconi ‘T’ 13M high with 30M top. The transmitter is running about 250W. Once a radio pirate, today a radio teacher

Ian MacRae worked on Radio Caroline during 1966 and 1967 when British offshore radio was at the height of its popularity. In a recent review of “The Boat that Rocked”, he took issue with how the movie portrayed this famous pirate broadcasting operation. Today he’s a “floater” for 2UE radio in Sydney, Australia and runs the Ian MacRae Radio School.
