Is it back to pirate radio for black Britons?
We set up the station to fill a cultural void. Rebranding it as Capital Xtra is a betrayal that takes us back to the 1980s, writes Neil Kenlock, who helped start Choice FM, on The Guardian website.
"If you took a walk down any south London street in the early 1990s, the slogan "London's soul power" could be heard booming with pride from passing car stereos, at local youth centres and in businesses too. This sense of community empowerment and embracing our black British identity was the vision we had as the founders of Choice FM, Britain's first successful radio station granted a licence to cater for the black community.
Now this dream lies in tatters after the station's current owners, Global Radio, effectively killed it off by turning it into Capital Xtra – leaving Britain with no black station with a commercial licence. After this announcement last month, there was a huge backlash from listeners outraged about the change of name and of programme format, including the sacking of popular DJs. And now broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has said it will monitor the station before deciding whether to launch a formal investigation."

Black Eagle QSL
I was pleased to receive a QSL from Dutch station Radio Black Eagle after hearing him on 6240 on November 10 at 1055 UTC. The op said he was using 8 watts, has been on the air for three months and his antenna is 2x15m V-shape. Thanks for the quick reply.

2013 Pirate Radio Annual
American DXer Andrew Yoder is now taking advance orders for his annual Pirate Annual. On his Hobby Broadcasting blog he writes:
"The 2013 Pirate Radio Annual is now nearly finished and I'm taking advance orders for copies of the book. I've been finishing assembling and editing the audio tracks for this edition over the past few weeks and I just spent a couple of hours creating the master audio CD tonight. That means that I can match my mistakes in hitting the track indicator with the track listing. This in turn means that I can finally finish the text files and send them to the printer.
From there, the finished books should be ready in 4-6 weeks.
In case you are wondering what the Pirate Radio Annual is, it's a paperback book with an 5.5" x 8.5" trim size. This is the 4th edition.
Each are divided into two parts: the first is pirate radio "articles" and the second part of the book is a listing of entries on North American shortwave pirate stations that were reported in the past year (and also European pirates that were reported in a large portion of North America).
The book contains images from dozens of stations + contact information, URLs of websites, etc. The "articles" in this year's edition include "Dutch pirate radio, 1931–1967" by Kai Salvesen, "Shortwave Pirate Radio 2012: A Year in Review" by Chris Smolinski, "Internet Resources" (for listening), and "Recording and Archiving Pirate Radio for Future Generations."
This year's edition is 176 pages and contains an audio CD-R with sample tracks of audio from pirates from the past year. 72 different stations are represented on the CD....although the recording is on a CD-R, it is an audio CD that can be played in standard CD players, computers, etc. BTW, after creating hundreds of these CDs, I heard from one reader that the CD wouldn't fit properly in his slot-loading Mac computer. If you want to use it in one of these computers or device with a narrow slot, let me know and I can send your CD without a label.
If you want an advance copy, the price until December 7 is $15 + $3 shipping ($18) to the United States, $15 + $5 shipping ($20) to Canada and Mexico, and $15 + $10 shipping ($25) to the rest of the world.
You can either send a check or money order in US funds to:
Cabinet Communications
PO Box 109
Blue Ridge Summit, PA 17214
or you can send the $ via PayPal to info /at/ hobbybroadcasting.com
My apologies for the delays in producing this year's edition! It's been a challenge!"

Channel 292 news
Dear friends of Radio Channel 292,
We have a short announcement for Sunday, 10th of November:
From 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm we will transmit the program of Radio Caroline/Rainbow: www.carolineteam.blogspot.cz
under the motto " Dont´t spy on us and to each other! "
And there will be a special QSL card!
The modification of our antenna system is proceeding bit by bit; with the new air choke replacing the old balun, the SWR is so good, that the reflected power is approximately 0,1 % - it can not be read anymore from the display.
On Sunday 3rd of November, at 8:30 pm, the 100,000th visitor visited our homepage - thanks to all those, who inform themselves there!
One question:
We recently received several requests why there is no account for donations. We especially thank our listener in Finland who donated 100€ - now we can pay some more hours of power for our transmitter :-).
So what do you think of the idea of publishing a donation account?
One suggestion:
If you have a music request that fits our music style, we would love to add it to our playlist. Please write an e-mail with the subject "music". If there is enough demand, we can also add a corresponding rubric on our homepage.
Regarding the new transmitter: unfortunately there are no news. We found one, but it has to be tuned and tested, and they are searching for the documentations...
That's all for now, see you soon!

Dutch telecom agency to get tough with pirates
Andy Sennitt post this on the PCJ Media and PCJ Radio Facebook group:
2 November 2013
People involved in illegal radio broadcasts in the Netherlands will no longer receive a warning but immediately get a fine, says the Dutch Telecom Agency. The penalty applies to all illegal FM broadcasts and can be as much as 45,000 euros .
Illegal radio stations often have a wide reach, causing stations that have paid for their licence to lose listeners and advertising revenue. The Telecom Agency receives about twelve hundred complaints a year from people who cannot listen to their favourite radio station because of interference.
Up to now, owners of land or buildings where an antenna system is found have received a warning letter asking them to stop the illegal broadcasts. A fine was imposed only if it appeared that the system was still used after the warning. Now they will get an instant fine, says the Agency. This applies to all those involved, both the owner or tenant of the place where the transmitter is, and the broadcasters themselves.
The tightening of the procedure is needed to ensure that more people adhere to the law. In addition to imposing fines, the Agency still has the power to put an immediate end to the broadcast by turning off the equipment and sealing it.

Radio Spaceshuttle news
Radio Spaceshuttle has already repaired first antennas. First ready was our 48mb antenna. We did test it on Saturday 2nd of November and antenna seemed to work nicely! But BIG PROBLEMS we faced was with our bigger transmitter which did not work at all. Seems that it has went seriously broken with few transmissions earlier this year with a broken antenna. (:
So we are forced to use our little Low Power transmitters in future (Back to poor old normal). That means also changes to our frequency plan published earlier.
Frequencies and transmitting power plan of Radio Spaceshuttle valid from 2nd of November 2013:
76mb (3900/3905/3927/4020 kHz] with 60 watts max. power. Antenna still under construction [Ready Thursday 7th of November??) If ready in time, TESTS during evening-night (7-8th November) between 21 up to 02 UTC??
48mb (6205/6210/6220/6260/6270/6305/6310 kHz)with 60 watts max. power. (Ready for use 1st Nov. 2013)
31mb (9270/9290 kHz)with 20 watts max. power. Antenna still under construction. (Ready in the beginning of December?)
25mb (12265 kHz)with 20 watts max. power. (Ready in the beginning of December?)
More info shall be sent after antenna works are done and time for more testing starts.
Best greetings,
Dick of Radio Spaceshuttle
