New documentary film about pirate radio
Drowned City is a new film exploring the world of FM pirate radio in London, following the people who spend their time dodging the law to put out their broadcasts out across the city. It recently won the Best UK Documentary at the London Independent Film Festival. There's a lot more information about the film at its website: www.drownedcity.com

Weekend programmes from FRS Holland, EMR and Radio City
On Sunday June 15 FRS-Holland will repeat its full last Sunday broadcast via the Internet: http://nednl.net:8000/frsh.m3u
For mobile devices there is a 24 kbps mono stream: http://nednl.net:8000/frsh24.m3u.
Just like last Sunday start is at 15:52 UTC/ 17:52 CEST and 6 hours later close down will be at 22.03 UTC/ 00:03 CEST.
Last Sunday we were not very lucky with propagation conditions. Although good reception was reported from different parts of Europe, also much poorer reception was the case at other locations. Variable... Especially 7700 kHz was poorer than we hoped for although the signal improved during the last 2 hours. Positive was 9302 kHz which replaced 5800 kHz. Knowing we used only relatively low power on 9302, it performed quite well in wide areas of Central Europe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Radio City will be on the air on Saturday June 14 between 08.00 to 09.00 UTC on 9510 kHz.
There is also the weekly transmission via Radio Mercurs in Riga, Latvia on 1485 kHz on Saturday evenings at 19.00 to 20.00 UTC.
The 4th Saturday of the month there is a transmission via Hamburger Lokalradio on 7265 kHz (carrier and upper side band) at 12.00 to 13.00 UTC
Please send all reports to: citymorecars@yahoo.ca Thank you!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EMR 15th June (Testing for the summer conditions):
9485 KHz between 15.00 - 16.00 UTC
7265 KHz between 16.00 - 17.00 UTC
Please send all E.M.R. reports to: studio@emr.org.uk
Thank you!

Pirate radio is going the way of other mass media
FLEX FM is one of London’s best-known radio stations. For 22 years it has broadcast a mixture of house, garage, jungle and techno music; its DJs appear at parties across the city. Yet its primary output is illegal. Flex FM’s studio is in a secret spot in south-west London and its transmitters are hidden at the top of council tower blocks. Every few months Ofcom, Britain’s broadcast regulator, rings up to suggest the station gets a licence, says Daniel James, a DJ. “But that’s not for us.”
Britain has had pirate radio stations since the 1960s, when Radio Caroline broadcast from a ship in the North Sea. In the 1990s unlicensed operators helped drive the rise of British types of dance music such as jungle and garage. Now that anyone can broadcast on the internet, illegal transmissions might seem unnecessary. Yet pirate stations survive, particularly in London. Around 75 broadcast regularly from within the capital, according to Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, and around ten do so 24 hours a day.

400 pirate radio stations in Valencia
I spotted this article in the latest edition of "Communication," the British DX Club's monthly magazine, and managed to track it down online. It looks at the pirate radio situation in Spain, in particular Valencia where the article on the El Pais website says there are 400 stations broadcasting without a licence.
But that it not the country's biggest pirate hotspot. According to the Spanish Commercial Radio Broadcasting Authority there are even more unlicensed stations in the Canary Islands and Andalusia.
Obviously the commercial stations are very unhappy with the situation and want the authorities to take action.
Here is part of the article on the English language website of El Pais.
"A mixing console, a computer, an antenna and a small transmitter worth a total of €1,500 is all that you need to take control of a radio frequency. This is the equipment used by a thirtysomething who broadcasts dance music sessions out of Jávea, a popular resort on the Mediterranean coast.
“I don’t do this for profit,” he replies via email. Yet his website offers ad space, mobile disco services and even t-shirts. Juan (an assumed name) juggles his dexterity at the mic with a day job as a Civil Guard officer, according to the local businessman who has filed a complaint with the Spanish military police about the amateur DJ's activities.
Pirates have taken the Valencian airwaves by storm. More than 400 unlicensed stations are broadcasting across the region with near complete impunity, sometimes even pushing out the legal stations by interfering with their frequencies.
The government’s sluggishness when it comes to issuing fines for this activity, coupled with the technical complexity involved in catching wrongdoers, has created a breeding ground for a movement that has been growing since 2007.
The outlaw broadcasters are also contributing to the flow of layoffs and shutdowns at the 125 legal stations operating in the country, and whose advertising revenues have been slashed by half, according to industry figures."
