Operator of Radio Caroline Int/Goofy passes away

Very sad news that  Paul, who operated Radio Caroline Int and Radio Goofy from the Czech/German border area has died.

He had cancer and in his last message on the AM Forum in February he said he was seriously ill and the cancer had spread.

Now Sluwe Vos Radio has been informed that he passed away on April 26, 2018.

He was frequently heard on 48 metres with programmes of music and jingles and also a regular in Iann's pirate chat. He always thanked me for logging his station.

He was devoted to his dog Goofy. His blog- https://carolineteam.jimdo.com - featured not only his free radio logs but also photos from his travels and many photos of Goofy!

eQSL from Greek pirate Zeppelin Radio

My tentative reception of Zeppelin Radio on Monday has been rewarded with an eQSL from the station. In an email the operator said he uses a homebrew 110W transmitter with 47m longwire antenna. Although Greek pirates are regularly heard mixing with the Dutch at the top of medium wave, not so many are heard on shortwave.

This is only my third shortwave Greek pirate - the others were Odyssey Radio and Spider Radio, around 10 years ago. Many thanks for this eQSL.

Let's hope conditions improve. A lot of the Dutch seem to concentrating on the top end of medium wave. Last night was busy on MW and I was getting many good signals - even on a small portable in the west of England.

Irish pirate radio history

This month's Wireless on Flirt FM features aspects of the history of the Irish pirate radio era of the 1970s and 1980s.

2018 is the 30th anniversary of the closure of the pirates in anticipation of new broadcasting legislation.

The programme features an interview with Irish radio historian Eddie Bohan on a new exhibition on the pirates to open in Dublin in May, and an interview with veteran broadcaster David Baker who worked in various Dublin stations in the 1980s and went on to radio in the UK.
