It has been an incredibly quiet Sunday on 48 metres as operators don't bother switching on due to on-going bad propagation. If you haven't seen it, Terry's blog explains what's going on: http://terrysradioblog.blogspot.co.uk/

Let's hope conditions improve. A lot of the Dutch seem to concentrating on the top end of medium wave. Last night was busy on MW and I was getting many good signals - even on a small portable in the west of England.

The problem also is that the UK/Irish stations worth their salt no longer broadcast, and there are no others to succeed them.

I would have to disagree with You there.
They are still some good Uk/Irish stations Including The Bogusman, the Ghoul, Radio Merlin, Laser Hot Hits, Radio Underground, Radio Pandora and many more.
It's not the operators fault that conditions are generally poor at the moment.

Paul.

Many more, Paul? I meant Livewire, WMR, Subterranean, Ozone(without Gary Stevens), Armadillo, Blackbeard, Sierra Sierra, Gloria, TCR/Nitrozone...
To call some of the ones you mention as being "good" is incredibly subjective, but it of course down to individual opinions/taste.

I think the stations battling on despite the bad propagation deserve our support.

Bogusman/The Ghoul are providing genuinely different programmes to what you would hear on mainstream radio - real "free radio." Also trying medium wave to try to get their programmes out there.

Laser Hot Hits has celebrated it 28th birthday and is still going strong with music for all tastes while Radio Merlin keeps plugging away.

Stations like XTC, Pandora and Underground also come on occasionally.

The UK shortwave free radio scene is not dead yet but this propagation is not helping so them, and all other free radio stations, need to know you're out there listening.
