English MW pirate heard in Netherlands

Listeners in the Netherlands are reporting reception of Radio Albatross, an East Anglian pirate station, on 819 kHz. According to the operator of the station, the antenna is marconi ‘T’ 13M high with 30M top. The transmitter is running about 250W. The station says its target area is Suffolk, South Norfolk and North Essex. The operator adds that the station has tried 576 kHz but the antenna efficiency is lower and local reception is not as good as 819. The station is also on 87.6 FM.

Once a radio pirate, today a radio teacher

Ian MacRae worked on Radio Caroline during 1966 and 1967 when British offshore radio was at the height of its popularity. In a recent review of “The Boat that Rocked”, he took issue with how the movie portrayed this famous pirate broadcasting operation. Today he’s a “floater” for 2UE radio in Sydney, Australia and runs the Ian MacRae Radio School.

Pirates use the internet

Pirate radio broadcasters are using the Internet to remotely access their transmitters, making it harder for authorities to find them. In the past, broadcast pirates would send their content to transmitters through radio or microwave links. Authorities, like UK airwave watchdog Ofcom, then developed tools to detect such remote links. Now, online audio streams "can also be used to get the signal via modem to a remote transmitter, " explains Paul Marks of New Scientist. This makes it much more difficult for the authorities to track where pirate broadcasters actually are, though Ofcom is developing tools to do so. Interestingly, their "dream is that pirates will migrate to the net and eventually ditch FM."

US pirates drop snail mal

A couple of operators are no longer QSLing via snail mail. Per postings on the Free Radio Network:

Kracker of Radio Jamba International: "I have asked the drop operator to return any reports to sender. I have not given the Belfast drop as a contact point in over 2 years. With the advent of technology they can find me via E-mail @ krackerradio @ pmlol.com

If I am in the mood to do a QSL I will but not before. I just find it redundant to get a snail mail report for a show that happened 6 months ago and them expecting more than I already gave with my show. Especially when no qsl was offered. -Kracker "

Atlantic 2000 on shortwave

Atlantic 2000 International will be on the air this Sunday June 7, on 6220 kHz from 08:00 to 09:00 UTC (10:00 to 11:00 CEST). Music from the 60s to nowadays, and of course, radio news.

Each correct reception report will be confirmed by a special QSL-card. Indeed, the 6th of June 1982, Atlantic 2000 International was broadcasting for the first time on shortwave.
