"It's still a few weeks away, so be sure to mark the next Global HF Pirate Weekend on your calendar. The last one, which occurred during the first weekend in November was a sort of trial run. Cupid Radio and Mike Radio from The Netherlands were both widely reported in North America, and the former even made it to Japan. Sluwe Vos Radio wasn't reported as much in North America, but this Dutch station was reported in Brazil during the last GHF weekend.

General frequency ranges:
15010-15100 kHz
21455-21550 kHz

Basic schedule:
European morning, 0800-1200 UTC from Europe to Asia/Japan/Oceania.
European afternoon, 1200-1600 UTC from Europe to North America and vice versa.
European night, 2200-2400 UTC from North America to Asia/Oceania.

Of course, these are general frequency ranges where pirates have broadcast during prior Global HF Pirate weekends. Some stations will surely operate on frequencies and times outside of these ranges. These will be updated on HF Underground (https://www.hfunderground.com/) and on the Hobby Broadcasting (http://hobbybroadcasting.blogspot.com/) blog as it happens."

Huddersfield pirate radio station closed down

A pirate radio station has been shut down after Ofcom officials discovered it being operated from a flat in Crosland Moor (Huddersfield, West Yorkshire).

The online radio station, called Passion Radio and specialising in reggae music, transmitted over a seven mile radius.

Kirklees magistrates heard that illegal broadcasters cannot be properly regulated and pose unfair competition to legitimate radio stations.

Passion Radio, run from a flat above a takeaway on Blackmoorfoot Road, was closed down after magistrates made an order for the equipment to be destroyed.

How many pirates broadcasting between 1610 & 1800 kHz?

Portuguese DXer Carlos Goncalves reports on the PlayDX blog his loggings in January. Here is a breakdown of how many pirates he logged between 1610 kHz and 1800 kHz from which countries:

NETHERLANDS 22
GREECE 55
BALKANS 22
UNID COUNTRIES 12

TOTAL 111

The Dutch stations tend to operate on the lower end of the X-band. The highest frequency Carlos observed a Dutch station was 1675 kHz.

The Greeks can be found anywhere between 1610 & 1800 kHz while the Balkan stations go for the higher frequencies. The lowest was observed on 1636 kHz but most operate above 1660 kHz.

What is interesting is just how many Greek pirates there are. Carlos' logs tend to favour the Mediterranean countries with the Greeks outnumbering the Dutch pirates.

I should also mention UK-based Wizard's MW Free Radio blog which shows just how active the Dutch scene is.

He logged 98 Dutch MW pirate operators in January which goes to show, as he says, the medium wave pirate scene is thriving - although most of the activity comes from the Netherlands, Greece and the Balkans. Very little from the UK.

The history of pirate radio - and why it's still here

Dazed magazine has a feature on FM pirate radio in London:

"Drive around some parts of London today and you’re still liable to hear mainstream radio broadcasts drowned out by fleeting bursts of unfamiliar music.

Pirate radio stations have been illegally hijacking the FM dial since the 1990s, but while the pirate scene is far smaller than it was in its heyday, the movement is still thriving on a local scale, and a vibrant array of online-only stations are inspired by the energy and spirit of the pirates.

To put it simply, pirate radio never left London.

The UK’s pirate radio story starts with Ronan O’Rahilly’s Radio Caroline back in the 1960s, famously avoiding the authorities by broadcasting from international waters, but it was really the 1990s that paved the way for pirate radio in this country."

Dutch AT takes legal station off air by mistake

The Dutch Radiocommunications Agency (AT) has made a serious error in its fight against pirate stations.

On Thursday it dismantled the antenna of Vechtdal NL in Ommen on 105.6 MHz, thinking it was an unlicensed station.

But the station is in fact legal, and is a theme channel of Vechtdal FM. The Agency says that something obviously went wrong with the checking of licences.

It remains to be seen if the Agency will pay for the costs of rebuilding the antenna and any collateral damage, bearing in mind that there is no established procedure for dealing with such a situation. Vechtdal NL is still operating online.

Chris Watson of Radio Geronimo Shortwave passes away

Tribute to Chris Watson of Radio Geronimo SW from his friend Shaun:

"I have just heard from Peter Verbruggen of FRS Holland that my long time friend and colleague at Geronimo Shortwave, Chris Watson, (real surname Regan) has passed away at home in France last Wednesday 28th December.

Chris was involved in shortwave free radio for over 30 years, operating Radio 48 in the 80s, and then Geronimo Shortwave from the 90s through to last year. He had a passion for shortwave and even though it became more difficult for him to broadcast via his own transmitter in more recent times due to his domestic circumstances, he kept Geronimo Shortwave going through various relay stations.

I worked alongside Chris since the 80s when I was operating Radio Apollo International on shortwave, often running both stations from the same woodland either in Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire or Wales.

He and his wife Pat became firm friends. The last time I met him was about 4 years ago on one of his occasional visits back to the UK when he helped me out with some shortwave aerial problems. I still continued recording shows for Geronimo until a couple of years ago when my work on the Prog Mill took over more of my radio time, but he was always supportive of that and my continued shortwave work with FRS Holland and was in touch as recently as October.

Chris was a true stalwart of shortwave free radio, with a genuine passion and enthusiasm which never dimmed. Shortwave will certainly be worse off for his absence.
Rest in Peace Chris. And may that big transmitter in the sky get a SINPO of all the 5's!"

This is very sad news. I have listened to Radio Geronimo Shortwave for many years and I remember listening to some of the stations he was involved in during the 1980s. RIP, Chris.

Christmas broadcasts from Mi Amigo

Hello listeners of Radio Mi Amigo International!

This Christmas we’ll present you with 2 extra high power- Special Event broadcasts that will cover a large part of the globe! What better occasion than X-mas to celebrate the fact that in 2016 we became the fastest growing AM/Shortwave station in Europe -and possibly the world.

Our special 2 hour broadcast on December 25th will come from the Armenian 100 kW transmitter -
aimed at the larger European region - including Eastern Europe and large parts of Russia and the Middle East.

In the night of December 26th * a very powerful 125 kW signal from Nauen in Germany will be aimed directly at North America, but with a large overlap in other regions as well.

Our special event show will be presented live from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, with contributions from all involved with Radio Mi Amigo, directly from studio's in Holland, The UK, Germany, Spain and Ecuador. We'll introduce ourselves to hopefully many new listeners, celebrate with the current ones, look back at our 2016 highlights and play some very special music. You'll get updates of our plans for next year and we'll talk DX and Shortwave.

On the 26th December 2016 FRS-Holland will be traditionally ringing out another year…

In most cases we are on the final December Sunday, usually after the Xmas weekend. This year Xmas Day December 25th is the final 2016 Sunday.

As the SW bands are usually crowded with stations on Xmas Day, FRS has decided to broadcast a day later on Boxing Day December 26th.

In the past years we have unfortunately seen a  decline in the number of listeners willing to participate in our seasonal broadcast.

We call on you as a faithful FRS friend and listener to participate in our 2016 Xmas Shows.

It’s simple… forward your very own personal Season’s Greetings (Xmas and/or New Year’s greetings) to the Free Radio Service Holland and we will make sure they’ll be read out during the broadcast. You can dedicate your greetings to radio friends, relatives etc. but you can also make a 'general' Xmas/ New Year’s Greeting. It can be written or taped (MP3 file or traditional media), it’s up to you!

Laser Hot Hits relay on 1494 seems to getting out well. I heard it at home at 1800 using my Degen 1103 portable, with a boost from a Tecsun AN200 loop antenna. SINPO 34333. With shortwave being so unreliable at the moment it seems to be the best way to get the signal out.

Special announcement for Artem's World Music N30

My dear colleagues and friends,

As you maybe know my next show will be N30. Unfortunately I had no special celebration on 10, 20 and 25…. So I am planning something special for N30.

All my listeners and operators who play my shows on the air know that it is dedicated to World Music. So if you are able to record a greeting for my show N30 n your native language, it will be great.

You also could remind me of music I maybe played or maybe you just want to hear, so ask me for a singer, group or just a region of the World and I’ll try to do my best!

Test broadcast via Channel 292 this Wednesday

Dear friends,


Christmas is near, and our schedule shows, that the holidays are really crowded. Due to the conditions during the winter, some stations moved to daylight hours:

Some new or well known programs can be heard (again), too: Hobart Radio from Australia, from Sweden the Swedish DX Federation, from Germany SM Radio Dessau, and Blueman Radio is one more. Surely these stations would be happy to get your reports!

And we have a request, not only for the listeners in German speaking areas:
Starting in 2017, a new station from the northern part of Germany wants to fill shortwave with life for some hours per day. They are still looking for a good partner to bring their program on air with a good and strong signal.

To check this, they will run a test program this coming week on Wednesday the 23rd, at 1400 CET = 1300 UTC on 6070 kHz.

We know that for a lot of listeners this will not be a good time to tune in, but all the others, who are able to listen, should send reception reports to the address mentioned in the program. Please let them know how good and strong (as we hope) you receive our signal!

If this test for them shows a positive result, it would be a big step forward for our station; maybe we even could run a second frequency in the 49 meter band.

Global Pirate Weekend

Hi,
I'm just writing with a reminder about the Global HF Pirate weekend is just starting. This is the revival of an idea from a few years ago: Stations broadcast on high frequencies in an effort to be heard across long distances and in different continents. I've heard from a few stations, received a schedule from one, and have heard from a few listeners in countries without many stations. So, I have hope that we'll all have a good time by the shortwave radios over the next 48 hours or so.

November 5-6, 2016
General frequency ranges:
15010-15100 kHz
21455-21550 kHz

Basic schedule:
European morning, 0800-1200 UTC from Europe to Asia/Japan/Oceania.
European afternoon, 1200-1600 UTC from Europe to North American and vice versa.
European night, 2200-2400 UTC from North America to Asia/Oceania.

Of course, these are general frequency ranges where pirates have broadcast during prior Global HF Pirate weekends. Some stations will surely operate on frequencies and times outside of these ranges. These will be updated on HF Underground and on the Hobby Broadcasting blog (http://hobbybroadcasting.blogspot.com/) as schedules are received from stations.
