Radio Pirana to broadcast from South America in CW mode

Greetings from South America. This evening from 21.00 UTC and until approx 11.00 UTC
tomorrow, we will air our beacon transmitter of 10 watts from somewhere in the southern part of south America.

Frequency is just around 6930 kHz CW. The msg. is transmitted in 10 WPM. This beacon will be on and off in the same sched the next weeks. When the beacon is not on the reason will be that we are on with AM broadcast around the same frequency with 100w carrier power. We are now preparing the transmitter that we hope to have on air in the coming
days.

Nearly 200 shortwave pirates heard in 2018

I've been through my logs for the past 12 months to see just how European shortwave pirates have been active, and the grand total is 179.

There will be some stations on air in 2018, but I haven't logged them while some pirate operators use more than one station name, so the final figure is a rough guide. Some stations may have only appeared once or twice on shortwave during 2018 while others are regular visitors to the bands.

Types of stations
I've split them into four types:
1. The sole operator. He will most likely broadcast from home, have no fixed schedule, just come on for an hour or so, play some music, chat a bit and sign off.
2. The non-stop music station. There have been a few of these who will play continuous music interspersed by ID jingles but no DJ.
3. The radio station. Some stations will have several DJs who will produce shows to be aired by the station which will normally broadcast from a remote location or via a relay, such as Laser Hot Hits, Focus International or FRS Holland. There are not many of this type of pirate stations still around.
4. The relayed station. Some licensed or internet stations get relayed on shortwave, such as Coast FM, Zenith Classic Rock or Charity Radio. Most of these relays originate from Ireland. I've not included these in my final total.

Locations
No prizes for guessing the country with the most shortwave pirates is The Netherlands. This is followed by the unknown locations (mainly the non-stop music stations),  then Germany, UK, Ireland and Italy followed by several other European countries with just one or two SW pirates.

So despite the challenges of broadcasting on shortwave - bad propagation and interference from other broadcast stations or utilities - the scene certainly remains active. So let's see what 2019 will bring.

MW Free Radio (Wizard Radio) reports on his Twitter feed: "News reaching us that British
shortwave pirate Bogusman was today raided by
Ofcom after transmitting on international distress frequency
6312 kHz. More to follow..."

Bogusman & The Ghoul have been some of the most regular of the British shortwave pirates with broadcasts most weekends and recently been testing at the top  end of medium wave. But it shows stations need to careful what frequencies they broadcast on.

The Radio Igloo Show no 3 was broadcast on December 10th, but unfortunately the frequency 1638 kHz was occupied and we had to change to 1633. Because of this some listeners missed our show.

Now we have decided to rebroadcast it on Sunday December 23rd at 22.00-22.45 CET (21.00-21.45 UTC). Hopefully 1638 is free otherwise we will choose a free frequency nearby.

FRS Holland's festive broadcast

Dear FRS & Radio Friends,

On Sunday December 30th FRS-Holland will be on air with its annual Holiday Season broadcast.
The broadcast will be on 7700//58xx  between 08:52- 14:00 UTC/ 09:52- 15:00 CET.
Similar to November 18th, the full broadcast will be repeated in the afternoon. More info follows later in December.

FRS-Holland offers you the opportunity to send in your December greetings to radio friends and relatives. Your contributions are highly appreciated and will add something special to our programmes!

You can easily produce a little (written) message and send it to [frs@frsholland.nl]. It only takes a few minutes of your spare time....

We raffle a radio DVD among those who participate in our December broadcast with their Seasonal greetings. We'd like to ask you to do it as soon as possible as some shows will be recorded within 10 days.

Don't hesitate but just do it!
