KBC to leave shortwave

KBC Radio, which broadcasts on 6055 via Lithuania from 2130-2230 UTC every night (and Sundays 0200-0300 UTC on 6110) has announced it is stop broadcasting on shortwave from September 30.

On their website, the station says it is moving and will be announcing its new frequency soon. It would appear they are moving to medium wave. Maybe back to their old frequency on 1386!

WNKR on 1395

This from Andy Sennitt of Media Network: "Before I get swamped with questions about what’s happening on 1395 kHz, a Dutch frequency last used by UK-based Big L, another UK-based station has moved to that frequency at weekends. WNKR, a pirate station that has been operating for 22 years, has moved to 1395 from 1476 kHz, apparently to avoid interference from a Spanish station, but is now suffering interference in the evenings from Trans World Radio operating from Albania with high power. The station apparently also has a shortwave transmitter on 6311 kHz."

(via http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/ .... there's also 11 comments on the item as well)

WNKR is rarely on shortwave these days, and not necessarily 6311.

Simon Dee dies

Simon Dee, the first voice to be heard on Radio Caroline in 1964, has died of bone cancer at the age of 74. Mr Dee (whose real name was Carl Henty-Dodd) left Radio Caroline in 1965 after being ‘head hunted’ by the BBC who gave him a show on the Light Programme. He also did some programmes for Radio Luxembourg. He was one of the original DJs on BBC Radio 1 which launched in 1967.

Full story: http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/simon-dee-rip

There are obituaries in all the newspapers today, but they mainly focus on his TV career after he came ashore. There was also a short item on the BBC News last night, including a shot of him broadcasting on Radio Caroline.

Mike Barraclough reports on Anorak Nation that there's a one hour tribute tonight (Monday) on Roger Day's show on BBC local radio in the South of England, starts at 1800. Because his shows start one hour earlier on Bank Holidays IIRC the first hour doesn't appear on Listen Again.

Radio Mi Amigo to broadcast on 1602

To mark 35 years since the start of the original Radio Mi Amigo as an offshore station, the Dutch Internet station of the same name will be broadcasting via the mediumwave transmitter of Radio Waddenzee on 1602 kHz from the radio ship Jenni Baynton on Sunday 30 August from 0800-1700 UTC.

Programmes will be presented by some of the current DJs and also some of the original DJs. The radio ship will be anchored in the harbour at Harlingen, Friesland.

It’s not stated whether the transmitter on board the ship or the regular landbased transmitter will be in use for this broadcast. A TV crew from Belgian public broadcaster VRT will also be filming during the day as part of a documentary they are making about the founder of Radio Mi Amigo, Sylvain Tack.

Just a reminder, Radio Caroline started broadcasting at 6pm UK time (1700UTC) on 531 kHz, and will be there until midnight on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31. More information at www.radiocaroline.co.uk.
