Britain's pirate radio stations are not going down without a fight

If you climb through a certain gap in a hedge on the crest of Somerset's Blackdown Hills, you'll stumble on a crime scene. Tied to a branch in the canopy of an old birch tree is the transmitter for Rage FM, Taunton's only pirate radio station. Owning it could get Alfie, the proprietor, two years in prison.

The former BBC Devon employee and self-styled community broadcaster, 35, isn't too worried about that. Pointing out local landmarks around the ripe green fields that undulate into the valley below, he looks and sounds like a posh West Country farmer surveying his lands. But to the station's 3,000 listeners, he's their favoured supplier of political polemic, flood warnings and jazz music.

New shortwave station Euro Radio to begin broadcasting in August

An new station called Euro Radio 6205 is due to start broadcasting on August 1 with 2kW.  On its
Facebook page it says: "Get your programmes and podcasts on air to a pan european audience with Euro Radio. our rates are the lowest in Europe!. The more airtime you buy the cheaper it gets! Email for details euroradio@gmx.com."

Is it a pirate or a licensed station - it is not clear?

Pirate radio operator fined nearly £4,000

A pirate radio boss has been ordered to pay almost £4,000 for running an illegal station and helping others with broadcasts.

Ricky Llewellyn, who runs drum and bass station Distinct FM, also allowed Hot 92, Irie UK and Sting FM to make broadcasts from his server.

The 29-year-old from Bilston appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court this week charged with managing a station knowing unauthorised broadcasts were being made and helping with the running of the other three stations. He pleaded guilty to all charges, claiming he wanted to provide a service to people who had no access to the type of music he played.
