The end of the Irish pirate era 25 years ago

The introduction of the Irish wireless and telegraphy act 25 years ago brought to an end the free-for-all on the Irish radio spectrum.

Radiotoday.ie marks the occasion with an article called "The day the music died" which includes a RTE news report from the time (including footage of raids on Nova and Sunshine) and several press cuttings.

The article begins: "A number of pirate radio stations closed 25 years ago today (Dec 30) and tomorrow, including WABC in Donegal and Sunshine in Dublin as the new broadcasting wireless and telegraphy act was introduced. The super pirates KISS, Q102, Radio Dublin, Sunshine Radio, Radio West, ABC, Coast 103 and more were silenced as the then Minister for Communications Ray Burke introduced new legislation aimed at suppressing the stations."

The 1980s saw Irish pirate stations take over the FM, medium wave and shortwave bands. A far cry from the situation today where there are only a handful still active. The only pirate from Ireland still on shortwave is Premier Radio, which can be heard regularly on 6910 kHz.

Pirate radio stations caused chaos for emergency services in Ireland

The Irish Independent newspaper reports:
Pirate radio and TV stations were causing chaos in 1983 for communications systems within the Irish emergency and transport services.

Confidential documents, released from the state archives, showed the government was determined to increase fines to clamp down on the soaring number of pirate stations.
One memo, dated April 23, warned: "Illegal radio stations have caused serious interference to authorised services in this country.

"Formal complaints have been received regarding harmful interference caused by unlicensed stations here to authorised broadcasting stations overseas.

Interference has also been caused to airport fire services, taxiing aircraft and aircraft immediately after take-off, to ambulance and garda radio networks and to radio and television reception."

In a separate memo to Posts and Telegraphs Minister Jim Mitchell, a civil servant warned that there were now 50 illegal radio stations operating in Ireland.
Such was the level of interference that emergency services were being impacted.

Of even greater concern, Dublin Airport had reported a total of 22 incidents in 1982 where radio frequency interference was recorded.

RKNW on shortwave

British medium wave pirate RKNW plans to take to  the airwaves on shortwave on Christmas Day. On its website it announces it will be using 6240 kHz plus a second relay from Germany.

Regular free radio listeners will recognise the names of the presenters: Andy Walker, Chris Ise, Jackie Frost, Stewart Ross and Andy Peters.

There will also be a selection of classic 'radio comedy' shows.

The station is normally heard on 1521 kHz on Sundays broadcasting to south west London.

FRS Holland on 41 metres this Sunday

Next Sunday, December 8th, FRS-Holland will conduct a test broadcast on 7310 kHz/ 41 metres.
The test will last for two hours between 10:00-12:00 UTC/ 11:00- 13:00 CET. We are understandably curious what reception is like in your particular area. Therefore we do hope as many listeners as possible will be tuning our way and send a reception report, either via e-mail or snail mail. Correct reception reports will be verified with our station QSL. You can truly help us by sending in your reception report!

Our next full broadcast will be over the Holiday Season: on Sunday December 29th FRS-Holland will continue a long time tradition, ringing out 2013. It was in the early 1980s that we started with December Xmas broadcasts. Only very few times in the past 33 years, FRS was absent in December.
In the past years we have seen a  decline in the number of listeners willing to participate in our Seasonal broadcast.

We call on you as a faithful FRS friend and listener to take part this year…
We’d like to invite you- the listener-  to participate. Forward your very own personal Season's Greetings to the Free Radio Service Holland and we will make sure it'll be read out during our broadcast. First Dutch pirate fined under new policy

The first FM pirate raided under the new Telecom Agency policy, has been fined . 'Club AA' from Gramsbergen  was fined nearly € 10,000, reported the pirate site etherpiraten.com
Since 1 November the pirate no longer gets a warning. And so a pirate who is raided can expect a letter after a few weeks .
In a recent judgment, the court endorsed the new policy of Telecom Agency, so the chances of success for a pirate when challenging his fine is not very good.

Until a year and a half ago the popular pirate frequencies 97.0 and 94.5 MHz from the north eastern provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe had almost permanently ( 7 days a week , 24 hours a day) extremely powerful pirates on air, with huge heavy transmitters and towers which caused serious interference to the reception of legal Dutch and German stations.Powerful Twente pirates with high masts which used a frequency 97.0, meant the reception of the 3FM station Lopik ( 96.8 ) and that of Radio NL Zwolle ( 97.2 ) and the broadcast station in the German Nordhorn Deutschland, Radio Kultur on 97.1 were made ​​completely unusable .

 Now it has become clear that Radiocommunications Agency is serious this time it is virtually silent on the pirate front. Pirates teams with powerful FM transmitters and high masts, which until recently were on air,  are nowhere to be seen.
If there a fixed transmitter, then the (minimal ) fine is € 2,500. When using mobile transmission equipment ( eg a mobile phone mast) the basic fine is € 5,000 .
 The maximum fine that a pirate can get is € 45,000 .In the case of Club AA Gramsbergen  the calculation of the fine was  € 9,928. This pirate was raided on Saturday, November 9, so after the new policy Telecom Agency. Two and a half weeks later the letter with intention to impose the penalty was sent .

Ultra-rare Radio Britannia heard in London

There are not many medium wave pirates operating in the UK, but one that's been going for many years is Radio Britannia from South Yorkshire, in the north of England. Now the station has been logged in London, 175 miles away, on its frequency of 1476 kHz.
