Next Global HF Pirate Weekend: November 3-5

"It's still a couple weeks away, so be sure to mark the next Global HF Pirate Weekend on your calendar.

The idea behind the Global HF Weekends are to promote friendship through radio around the world. The hope is that listeners will be able to hear different stations and for broadcasters to reach distant locations. Anyone may participate. I've already heard from a few stations who plan to broadcast and I've been in contact with a number of listeners.

The last one, which occurred during the first weekend of April, resulted in some success with intercontinental broadcasting.

Four North American pirates all operated around 0600 UTC between 6920 and 6950 kHz and were heard in New Zealand.
A South American station ran 24/7 tests on 6930 kHz across Global HF Weekend and was reported in Germany, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and South America with only 10 watts.
One Dutch station was logged in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Kentucky, New York, Maryland, and Virginia.
Other stations were active specifically for the weekend, but just for a local or regional audience.

We'll see how many stations show up during the next weekend. It seems unlikely that stations will be using 13 meters this time and much more likely that stations will be trying the 6900-kHz range and possibly 31 and 25 meters.

Maybe 15010-15090 kHz, probably 6200-6400 kHz and 6800-6990 kHz

Of course, these were general frequency ranges used by pirates during prior Global HF Pirate weekends. Some stations will surely operate on frequencies and times outside of these ranges. In fact, the way conditions have been lately, frequencies at or below 15 MHz seem like they will be more effective for intercontinental broadcasting.

Laser Soul Hits

Hi this is a message I am sending out to all my friends and contacts into free radio, writes Gary Drew.

I would like to invite you to listen to Laser Soul Hits broadcasting on the internet 24 hours a day and
on 87.8 FM on very low power to a small part of the eastern home counties.

Let me make it clear from the start that Laser Soul Hits is not in competition with Laser Hot Hits, it is a sister station to LHH in the same way as Laser Dance Hits (also known as laser hot hits dance). All our stations support each other in our own special way.

Laser Soul Hits was set up by me as a hobby station to share some of the music I enjoy and to rebroadcast archive material I have collected over many years and have lovingly restored with enhanced audio quality to share once again on LSH as a 'tribute to radio'.

When I do shows for LHH they will sometimes be live with LSH at the same time and sometimes I will more specialised  live shows soley for LSH only. All my shows from LHH past and present will be repeated on rotation on LSH and the playout system is changed regularly once per week.

Here's the format for Laser Soul Hits.
6am - midnight (approx) everyday on rotation - ultimately Soul, funk, rare groove music with a tiny splash of reggae and dance. Gary Shows shows past and present on repeat but sometimes live in sync with Laser Hot Hits and original 80's landbased soul pirate radio station shows lovingly restored for repeat all these years later. Plus other new shows and sponsored daytime shows.

Midnight - 6am every night - offshore and pirate radio documentaries, original restored shows from offshore radio, sponsored radio related programmes. A hint of jazz, other radio enthusiastic type material for the SWL and DXer.

Dutch shortwave station raided

Reports of problems of radio, TV and broadband interference in Limburg led to an investigation by Agentschap Telecom. They said some people complained of not being able to use their phones, internet or TVs daily because of interference.

AT say it was because of illegal broadcasts in the 6MHz band. They also say they have had complaints from a foreign government about 6MHz interference.

After an investigation AT traced the signal to a house which they believe was causing the interference and seized the equipment.

The report doesn't say what the name of station raided was.

This was based on a Google translation from the original report in Dutch.

VORW resumes shortwave broadcasts to Europe

Dear VORW Radio Listeners,

Since the last newsletter, there are several changes and updates to announce for VORW Radio International.

Broadcasts directed to Europe have now fully resumed after multiple requests from listeners in the region. Transmissions to Europe take place every Sunday at 1600 UTC - that's 12 PM Eastern, 5 PM BST. The frequency to listen on is 9400 kHz which is transmitted with 150 kW of power from Bulgaria. This transmission may also be audible in North Africa, the Middle East and portions of Central Asia. Reception reports for broadcasts on 9400 kHz are greatly encouraged! 

Here is the Transmission Schedule:

6 PM Eastern - 11 PM BST - 9955 kHz to South America
8 PM Eastern - 1 AM BST - 7490 kHz to North America
8 PM Eastern - 1 AM BST - 9395 kHz to North America
8 PM Eastern - 1 AM BST - 7730 kHz to Western North America
8 PM Eastern - 1 AM BST - 9455 kHz to Central America

Sundays: 

12 PM Eastern - 5 PM BST - 9400 kHz to Europe
4 PM Eastern - 9 PM BST - 9395 kHz to Eastern North America
6 PM Eastern - 11 PM BST - 7490 kHz to Eastern North America
