I received a nice email from Vasily of Big Podcast after his show was relayed by a Dutch pirate on Saturday.

He writes: "It was a surprise for me to learn that we were being simulcast on shortwave from Holland. This was never in our plans, as we are a weekly, live internet based radio show from Moscow for Russian language listeners around the world. Imagine the look on my face, when I got the news that we were heard on 6238 Khz all over Europe. Nevertheless, thanks to our friends in the Netherlands for making this transmission possible. Perhaps we will soon be back on the Pirate Bands. You never know…

FRS Holland on Sunday evening

Dear FRS Friends,
Following a 6 month break, FRS-Holland will return to the SW free radio airwaves next Sunday (August 25th). Unlike our usual broadcasts, this one will take place in the evening  hours between 17:52- 22:00 UTC/ 19:52- 24:00 CEST.

 FRS-Holland will be on 7600 kHz & 5810 kHz. In case there's any interference on either channels, we move to 7685 and/or 5800 kHz. Propagation during evenings has been solid over the past period, so we are looking forward to an evening with loud signals over Central and Western Europe.

 It'll be an 'old fashioned' 4 hour FRS broadcast and our full staff will be involved apart from Paul Graham (will be back later this year). Next Sunday we focus on the Summer of Love 1967, 70s gold (including rare tracks!), 80s & a special on the early 80s Neue Deutsche Welle (new German wave). And of course we have radio related items in all shows (land based free radio & offshore).

 Next Sunday: an evening full of nostalgia on your SW receiver.... We are looking forward hearing from you. We invite all our 'old' friends to  tune in and hope there will also be a number of new listeners as well!

 Hope you are able to tune in next Sunday. Likely the full August 25th shows  will go out via the Internet one week later on Sun September 1st. More news about that will follow.

Dutch pirate Radio Osaka 'forced' to close down

Hello All Free Radio Friends!

I had also the honour, personally being handed over the letter from Dutch Telecom Agency, presented to me on Thursday, 2013.08.01 13:42.

Two "officials" a man and woman came at my door. The question came to me directly... did I disturbed? No that wasn't the case, but they got a call from "someone," who told them, I was on-air almost every day,  so no problems by neighbours etc. I just was above ground level.

The Telecom-woman, was in training, so...The Telecom Agency people were very gentle. I could stay on-air till 15 hrs - probably to prevent escalation.

I 've been on-air in a few years time, where others do maybe this in 10 or more years time! I 've enjoyed the time being! There wasn't any confiscation of equipment etc. So before the story goes "wild" this is what happened. Quick and neat.

So keep a low profile for some time.. you have been warned! I wish you all a nice week end! Be calm and keep on "fighting" for free radio!

Israeli army weighs military action against pirate radio stations

It is not on the agenda for peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority that began yesterday in Washington, but it is a major problem that may have to be solved by force rather than simply by negotiations.

Earlier this week, Israel said it might take military action to halt broadcasts from pirate radio stations operating in the West Bank. The reference to military action came after two days when radio stations in the West Bank caused severe disruption to radio transmissions between Ben Gurion airport control tower and aircraft in the area.

The Israeli communications ministry says the Palestinian Authority is doing nothing to prevent illegal radio stations from operating. The ministry has filed an official complaint with the authority in the vain hope that it will solve the problem.

On Sunday, officials at Ben Gurion airport said interruptions to communication from the broadcasts forced the tower to open greater intervals between flights, disrupting the flight schedule.

Israeli sources say the pirate radio stations operate mainly from the Ramallah area, in contravention of a series of agreements.

“The Palestinian Authority ignores the problem,” says one Israeli source.

Ben Gurion Airport uses a portion of the FM band for communication with incoming and outgoing aircraft and Israeli radio stations are banned from using those frequencies.

Pirate radio stations in Israel that have disrupted aviation have been closed. Operators have faced heavy fines and some have been jailed.

Israeli sources emphasise that if all other means fail, the Israeli army will locate the stations and shut them down by force. “This is an act of terror that can cost in lives,” says one.

The exact location of the pirate radio stations is known so the military option could be adopted immediately.

Pirate Radio Thrives in Internet Age

Unlicensed “pirate” radio stations are thriving in the Internet age, despite the fact that most people can now operate their own Web-based radio stations without risking arrest.

“A vibrant pirate radio scene continues in the United States, and also in Europe and to a lesser extent in South America,” said George Zeller, a pirate radio listener/journalist for the past four decades.

“This includes a very energetic pirate radio scene on shortwave, and also a stunningly resilient pirate radio scene on FM and to a lesser extent on medium wave, despite the frequent busts by the FCC of FM pirates.”
