Just a short reminder of our regular weekly brodcasts on Wednesdays. Marconi Radio International will once again be on air tomorrow 18 May 2016, from 1800 to 1900, 2000 to 2100 and from 2130 to 2230 UTC on 7700 kHz USB mode.  

The first half hour is always a DX programme in English (Italian Shortwave Panorama) followed by mailbag show in Italian or non-stop music interspersed with announcements in English, Italian, German, French, Spanish and Catalan.

New low-power medium wave licences in Netherlands

One of the first stations to go on the air under the new legislation may be the long time pirate – Atlantis Radio 1521 – in Friesland. They got a license (?) from Commissariaat voor de Media in March 2016, and they recently purchased a new 75 W AM transmitter (300 W PEP). Marconi Radio International on air today

As from Wednesday, 4 May 2016 Marconi Radio International will start a regular service according to the following schedule:

On Wednesdays, from 1800 to 1900 UTC, from 2000 to 2100 UTC, and from 2200 to 2300 UTC on 7690 kHz USB mode (alternative frequencies: 7700 and 7790 kHz).

The power is in the region of 100 watts. We have standardized our transmissions: there are now only broadcasts 60 minutes long. The first half hour is always a DX programme in English (Italian Shortwave Panorama) followed by mailbag (or DX) show in Italian or non-stop music interspersed with announcements in English, Italian, German, Spanish and Catalan.

New Zealand's Radio Hauraki pirate Chris Parkinson dies

Radio New Zealand reports:
   
Radio Hauraki co-founder Chris Parkinson has died at the age of 74. He was one of the four original directors of the country's first pirate radio station, which broke the government monopoly on radio broadcasting in the 1960s.

Broadcaster Chris Parkinson was a co-founder of pirate radio station Hauraki.  The original Radio Hauraki broadcast from a boat moored in the Hauraki Gulf outside the three-mile territorial limit. Its popularity eventually persuaded the government to relax the regulations around radio broadcasting, allowing other private stations to begin transmission.

Chris Parkinson went on to become involved with talk station Radio Pacific, and worked in the Australian radio industry. His voice was regarded as the one of the best in broadcasting. He was the recipient of many awards during his career, including the Pater Award for the Golden Voice of Australasia in 1987.

Mr Parkinson was also the well-known continuity voice for TVNZ News and Current Affairs, and other programs throughout the 1990s. He died in Auckland.

Some changes to Channel 292's schedule

British DX Club member Alan Gales writes:

Some recent changes noted on the Channel 292 schedule:

1700 UTC on Thursday 28th - 'Radio Back in Time' (new!).

1300 UTC on Saturday 30th - 'Groovelines' (monthly).

1700 UTC on Saturday 28th - 'Free Radio Skybird'.

1900 UTC on Thursday 5th & 11th of May - 'Just Right' (new).

Note: these are just in addition to the regular weekly programmes, such as 'From the Isle of Music' and 'DigiDX', and a full list of the current schedules for all the channels' programmes can be found at: http://www.channel292.de/schedule-for-bookings/

Some stations have vanished from the schedule, amongst them are 'Authentic Rock Radio', and the 'Christian Media Network', which had been running on some weekday afternoons. Radio Northern Ireland now only seems to be available on WRMI, though it does seem to be well received in more distant places on 15770 and 9955 kHz now.

RNI station operator Jordan Heyburn was recently featured on the programme 'World Report' on CBC Radio in St John's, Newfoundland, after he listened to CKZN shortwave 6160 kHz (which is situated in St John's, and which relays the medium wave signal from CBC NL's Happy Valley Goose Bay station). The Shortwave Service have now added a repeat of the 'Radio Canada International' broadcast, which appears on Saturdays at 1400 on 7310 kHz, and the repeat can now be heard on Sundays at 1400 UTC on 6005 kHz as well (listeners who can't receive their signal can still listen to the live streams via the Shortwave Service website).

Channel 292 plans link up with American shortwave station

To our listeners and customers

At the moment we are working on some kind of cooperation with a station in the USA, broadcasting on shortwave, too. If interested, our customers in Europe could place combined bookings for Europe and the USA together; we are thinking about a price of 44 euros / 49 US Dollars for one hour on both stations.

The station in the US uses 50 kW and reaches the US, Central America and parts of South America in good quality. We ask our customers to let us know if they are interested in combined bookings, or maybe for bookings only for the US.

 In the case of combined bookings of course the programmes for Europe and the US can be different.

Channel 292 updates

British DX Club member Alan Gales gives more details about some of the stations broadcasting via
Channel 292

'WORD OF DELIVERENCE' which will be on from 0600 to 0700 UTC for at least the next 5 weeks on Saturdays and Sundays (I remember the film well!):-)

'SM RADIO INTERNATIONAL' will be another regular with its rock n' roll oldies show every Saturday from 0900 to 1200 UTC.

'RADIO WAVES INTERNATIONAL' also now seems to be another regular on Saturday mornings, and has a slot from 0900 to 1000 UTC.

Starting on the 5th of April, 'CHRISTIAN MEDIA NETWORK' will be on air on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1500 to 1600 UTC.

Monday 4th of April see the first appearance of German language station 'SATZENTRALE' from 1600 to 1700 UTC. I think this is a programme about satellite reception from what I can gather.

The lovely Cuban music station 'FROM THE ISLE OF MUSIC' is now a regular on Tuesdays from 1900 to 2000 UTC

Sadly there will be no more 'DigiDX' via this channel for the forseeable future, and Kim Elliot reported in his latest VOA Radiogram information, that the German regulator has ruled that digital modes are not allowed in the Broadcast Bands. Because of this there will be no MFSK on The Mighty KBC either this weekend. DigiDX should still appear on WRMI, it's just the German transmitters that the ban seems to apply to thankfully.

What a pity, hard to see what harm they were doing, and the VOA tests have proved time and again what a useful mode this is under poor conditions and when interference is affecting the channel.

Kim also mentioned that the DigiDX transmissions via WRMI in Florida, will be on Sunday at 2130-2200 UTC on 15770 kHz, and 2330-2400 UTC on 11580 kHz.

'FLYING CIRCUS ROCK SHOW' is now twice weekly with its one hour show of classic rock, at 1600 UTC on Fridays and 1900 UTC on Sundays.

'AUTHENTIC ROCK RADIO' is now another station with a regular slot at 1600 UTC on Tuesdays, and 'RADIO NORTHERN IRELAND' moves to a new earlier regular slot on Mondays from 1700 to 1900 UTC.

'MENNONITE RADIO' and 'BROAD SPECTRUM RADIO' are regulars on Sunday from 1500 to 1600 UTC, and the one hour version of Broad Spectrum appears on Mondays now from 1400 to 1500 UTC just before the DARC Radio repeat.

Other broadcasts to look out for are 'FREE RADIO SKYBIRD' on Saturday 2nd of April at 1600 to 1700 UTC, and THE RARITIES SHOW' right after this at 1700 to 1800 UTC. That is then followed by 'RADIO SYLVIA'
from 1800 to 2200, and then the new weekly Italian language 'BCL NEWS' programme from 2200 to 2300 UTC. This station is now also a regular on Sundays as well from 1100 to 1200 UTC, which is right after DARC Radio's 100kW transmission from Moosbrun.

'POPRADIO OSTFRIESLAND' makes another appearance from 1300 to 1500 UTC on Sunday, along with the other enjoyable Sunday regulars such as Goldrausch6070 and SuperClan Radio.

Finally, the Shortwave Service at Kall now shows details of the two  Radio Canada International broadcasts, and these are:

1430 to 1530 UTC on Saturday 2nd of April on 6005.0 kHz in the French language, and on 7310 kHz in English from 1400 to 1430 UTC.

Again things do get moved around, especially as we are only just into the new A-16 schedule, so do check their website for any late alterations to be sure of not missing any of them.

What with Radio Joystick on 7330 kHz at 1000 UTC on Sunday, all the HLR programmes, and Hobart Radio International on 7310 kHz on Sunday at 1500UTC as well, it looks like we're in for a very busy weekend on the
German relay channels.

QBC International testing new frequency

We are testing on 6965 (-ish) kHz in the next few evenings. This frequency often seems to be clearer than 6985. Reception reports are welcomed, as always. We will stay on this frequency if results are good (primarily in terms of interferences).

We also have a new transmitter, a 25 watt Commando with series modulator, based on Dave Martin's famous design. With this transmitter, we doubled the output power and the audio should be cleaner now, too. Although it might not be very noticeable at the receiving end.

Also, thanks for the recent reception reports. I hope, I can reply to everyone until the end of this weekend.

FRS Holland broadcast & the need for good reception reports

On Sunday March 20th FRS-Holland will hit the SW airwaves. Programmes that day will last all day and start at 08:52 UTC/ 09:52 CEST with no less than 5 hours of music and information.

FRS will offer you a varied offer of  progarmmes and no doubt it will be worth while to tune in our way. A Sunday full of music, information and radio related items....the 'old fashioned' true sound of short wave free radio.

Frequencies will 9300//7700 kHz throughout the day and 6070 kHz in the afternoon. Tune in! Go tell your friends...

May we take this opportunity to tell you that any mail or snail mail is more than welcome. Remember your support (letters, mails, reception reports) is our reward and thus very important. Without support the motivation to produce an FRS Sunday with all the ingredients would be much less. It's the listeners (that's also you!!)   keeping us going...please keep that in mind.

We'd shortly like to focus on the subject of reception reports. In recent months we have been aware that there's a great difference in the quality of reports. Some reports are well written and contain all 'elements' any report should include (including various programme details). Unfortunately we also receive (most likely well well intentioned!) very plain two or three line reports in which some 'elements' are completely missing. We'd like to stress that we very much like to issue our QSL cards but not in case reports are incomplete! In this way we would refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reception_report

It's very simple!  Especially some of the  listeners should be aware that details doesn't mean 'presenter' or 'pop music' but the name of the presenter, show and record/artist.

Long Live Radio & Key Channel Radio eQSLs

Couple of great eQSLs arrived in my inbox recently. The first was from new Italian station Key Channel Radio and the second came from Long Live Radio.

Key Channel Radio says it broadcasts from the north of Italy using a max power of 110W, antenna is a inverted V with balun. They say you can find more info on their Facebook pages under "The KCR team."

We have added another transmission for tomorrow (Saturday 27th). The same edition of episode two which will broadcast to North America will also broadcast to Europe on 3985Khz at 1700UTC via Radio 700 in Germany. DigiDx Report via Channel 292

First broadcast of DigiDX is Tuesday 23rd February at 1700 and repeated at 2000 and 2100, all on 6070Khz in the MFSK32 mode.

The first show includes shortwave and DX news from the last week, future shows will include reviews, features, schedule information and listener feedback.
