Mystery of tango station on 6980 kHz

Recently a station has been heard on 6980 kHz playing tango music. Many DXers assumed it was Radio Tango Italia. But an email from the operator says it wasn't him.

"Dear friend, unfortunately I have to inform you that this is not my transmission regarding my Radio Tango Italia, plus I don't use this frequency, I sent from 6205 to 6300 KHz, currently I'm not in business, I think I'll resume experimental transmissions in a few months, if in your possibilities I kindly ask you if you will be able to inform other passionate friends by email, forum, blog, facebook etc. with regard,

World Music Radio forced to suspend shortwave service

In an announcement on their Facebook page, WMR has said: "In a completely unexpected move the Danish authorities (Energistyrelsen) has withdrawn the permission to use out of band short wave frequencies (on a non interference basis) for World Music Radio (WMR).

"This means that WMR will be ceasing operations on 5840 and 15805 kHz tomorrow (Sunday September 15th 2019) at 2200 UTC. WMR may return to shortwave – using frequencies inside the official SW bands – but this may take several months.

"Meanwhile WMR continues working on getting on the air on medium wave 927 kHz in Copenhagen.

"Thanks for listening to WMR on short wave for the past almost two years. Please keep listening via internet streaming at www.wmr.dk "

This will no doubt also hit another low powered Danish station, Radio OZ-Viola which uses 5825 kHz, but no announcement from them yet.

FRS Holland to repeat 39th anniversary broadcast this Sunday

Dear FRS Friends,

On Sunday (September 8th) FRS will repeat last Sunday's broadcast which suffered from very poor/ unstable propagation conditions. That means once again a start at 16:52 UTC/ 18:52 CEST.

Frequency: only 5810 kHz. It looks like higher freqs like 7700 suffer from very long skip nulling out reception in large parts of out target area. We hope for better/stronger reception but realize that the current conditions simply are (very) poor!

Vintage pirate radio magazines online

Cool AM has provided a link to pirate radio fanzines which have been digitally scanned and turned into PDFs. These can be accessed via a Google Drive link.

Among titles featured are the Anoraks UK Weekly Report, Radio Argus News, Free Radio Waves, Pirate Connection, Wavelength and many more.

Back in the 1970s & 1980s, there was no internet so getting access to information about your favourite pirate radio stations was not easy.

Some pirate stations had DX shows, while there were free radio columns in DX clubs' monthly magazines. But enthusaists also published their own A4 typewritten fanzines with all the latest information that listeners could subscribe to.

These had all the latest news from shortwave, medium wave, Ireland and offshore. So if you want to wallow in some nostalgia why not take a look?

FRS Holland's email problem fixed

Dear FRS Friend,

A third mail from us within a week, quite unusual. Yesterday I reported about mailbox problems. In the mean time this issue has been solved! Happy...

On the contrary: we  at FRS feel totally unhappy and disappointed about last Sunday's broadcast. In the past years almost all Summer Sunday evenings broadcasts produced a good response from all over Europe, partly due to good signals.

Things in 2019 are different! Already on July 28th we were confronted with unusual poor propagation in the evening hours. For that reason we repeated the broadcast two weeks later on Sunday August 11th. That one was slightly better, still not good.

Last Sunday we had good hopes for a satisfactory broadcast, our 39th anniversary. There was an interesting line up of programmes with interesting topics and all of our team was motivated to produce a great show.

But unfortunately things were even worse than in July. What never happened: 7700  was almost inaudible in areas where usually a good signal is produced. In several areas 5810 did better than 7700. But that was only during part of the broadcast. In some areas both signals couldn't be received at all. Signals were unstable and faded in and out. After 21 CEST we 'scored 'S9 in Slovenia and Poland. But: in areas we usually provide fair/good signals (almost) nothing was to be heard. And thus in our target areas there was little to enjoy.

For all of us very frustrating... With such unpredictable, unreliable conditions a repeat doesn't seem to be a solution. Finally it's possible that next weekend conditions are the same as they were last Sunday. We have to praise our engineer for doing the utmost to put out decent signals. But you cannot win from nature...

I have contacted the company who takes care of our our hosting and hope to hear what's going on (and going wrong). Messages are returned telling the mailbox is full which is - as far as I can see - not the case.

Radio Space returns after 35 years for special broadcast

Special event station Radio Space will be on air in the 49 m-band on 6070 kHz on Saturday, September 07, 2019 between 12.00 and 14.00 UTC.

Radio Space was a popular fee radio station in the early 80s on FM in the Westhoek region of Belgium. The station finished broadcasting in November 1984.

This year they are having a reunion from the same location in Hoogstade, in the western part of Belgium, with a 3 day broadcast on FM 94.9 MHz for the region, but also a 2 hour broadcast for Europe on 6070 kHz.

During these 2 hours you will hear the program “The European Top 40 of the 80s”.  Reception reports are very welcome and are 100% answered with a special Radio Space eQSL card!

Caroline to commemorate closure of Dutch offshore stations in 1974

Radio Caroline DJ Andre van Os will commemorate the Dutch offshore radio stations that closed down 45 years ago this Saturday, 31st August 1974.

We play two hours of Dutch bands from the early 1970’s and jingles from Radio Veronica, Northsea and Atlantis on Tuesday Sept 3, 10pm-midnight  BST (21-2300 UTC/23-0100 CET)

Pirate Hunt 2019 diploma

I've received a diploma from the organisers of the Pirate Hunt 2019 for taking part in this year's contest. The event was held at Easter and challenged DXers to log as many pirate stations over a 48 hour period.

Ten competitors from four different countries took part in the competition. The club decided not to publish the results as it was felt listeners who used multiple SDR receivers in different countries would have an unfair advantage from those listening on their home receivers. FRS Holland hopes to be on air tomorrow

Dear FRS Friends,

On July 31st we sent out a mail informing about a possible repeat of our July 28th broadcast. That repeat was planned for last Sunday but a faulty 5810 transmitter made us decide to wait another week hoping the rig would be repaired in time.

The current situation is that it's most likely the rig will be repaired for tomorrow. However...most likely is nót 100%!

Anyway, the repeat will take place tomorrow (Sunday August 11th). The time schedule will be the same as  it was two weeks ago: 16:52- 20:55 UTC/ 18:52- 22:55 CEST. Frequencies: either 7700 only or (hopefully!) 7700//5810 kHz.

We are eager to hear from you either via frs@frsholland.nl  or of course P.O.Box 2702, 6049 ZG Herten, The Netherlands.

In three weeks time on Sunday September 1st FRS-Holland hopes to celebrate its 39th anniversary. That will also be a Sunday evening broadcast. Details will follow in the final August week.

Tribute programme to Radio Andorra

Radio Andorra was a legendary radio station, transmitting on mediumwave and shortwave from 1939 to 1981, from the Principality of Andorra, a small country between France and Spain. The station was officially launched on 7th August 1939.

To celebrate the 80 years of this launch, Atlantic 2000 will transmit a special tribute programme on Saturday, August 10th, from 08:00 to 09:00 UTC on 6070 kHz and online.

From 09:00 to 11:00 UTC, online only, we will repeat the tribute to Radio Andorra that we transmitted in 2009, for the 70th anniversary of Radio Andorra.

Atlantic 2000 will be on the air again on Sunday 11th August from 19:00 to 20:00 UTC with music and dedications, on 6070 kHz and online.
