KBC planning to return

Dutch-based KBC Radio, which was involved in the ill-fated attempts by UK broadcaster Big L to get a commercially viable mediumwave signal into the UK from a Dutch transmitter at Trintelhaven on 1395 kHz, is planning test transmissions under its own name. An announcement on its website says:
“We are waiting for a test licence. The reason that we are gonna test is to see if the signal is doing anything during the nightly hours. The test is on AM and not on SW. SW is always possible, but it’s not our first priority.”
The location and frequency of the AM transmitter in question will be revealed when the licence is received. In the meantime KBC continues to support Big L, which is currently online only.

The story of a little known pirate station in Zimbabwe

Kanyi Pamukwendengwe writes in the Mail & Guardian online: “What began as idle village talk over tea and tobacco quickly became reality when the son of my late uncle smuggled in a cheap Chinese radio transmitter from South Korea. For a week what was probably the first independent village radio in Zimbabwe rocked our little, insignificant village. ”
The station, called Pachindau People’s Radio, with a range of 7km, went on air from 6pm to midnight, powered by a diesel generator for seven solid days. But it was raided by the authorities and its equipment was confiscated.

FCC gets tough on US pirates

Spiceislander.com
April 8, 2011

The FCC  raided an FM gospel radio station operating in Brooklyn, New York.  The station has been illegally operating for almost one year providing 24 hours of gospel programming.

The FCC is planning to respond to every single complaint about a pirate station. Working with law enforcement, they will be raiding every pirate station and seizing all broadcasting equipment.

Owners will be fined $10,000 which will automatically be deducted from bank accounts, and they will be immediately arrested. The airwaves in places like Newark, Brooklyn, Boston, Miami, etc will have a lot less interference. The mass raid will most likely take place in a span of only 24 hours. Obviously, they’re not going to announce when the raid will be, but it will be sometime soon.

After the mass raid, the FCC will revamp their infrastructure to speed up the shutdown of pirates in the future. Within 24 hours of any complaint, field agents will determine the source of the pirate broadcast and immediately summon the police to raid the station. Raids will happen at any time, even at 3:00 AM on a Sunday night.

Ofcom airs anti-pirate station

Broadcast regulator Ofcom has launched a radio station of its own, to remind would-be DJs that it's against the law to broadcast on FM without a licence.

The station, on air in London on 87.7 FM has been broadcasting recorded messages since it began transmission this week.

The service encourages people to report pirate stations or interference on regular stations because of pirates by filling out an online form on the Ofcom website.

An Ofcom spokesman told RadioToday.co.uk that the service has three main aims. "Firstly, it is to advertise the availability of 87.7 MHz for temporary radio services," he said. "Secondly, it is to explain about Ofcom
and our key responsibilities. And finally, it is to raise awareness about illegal broadcasters and the problems that they cause."
