On the University of Twente Receiver, I logged on at 6am British Time, and there was a very strong signal from Radio Utopia, complete with jingles and schlager type music. They were on 1617 kHz. There was another station on (I think If i recall rightly) 1651 kHz, apologies it was before morning coffee so I forgot to scribble down the frequency. They were playing more old fashioned gramophone type tunes in Dutch and German, and there was the odd announcement, but no name deciphered from the fast presentation.
Tonight, I tried the remote receiver at Makri, just outside Athens. There were pirates on 1620, 1650, 1660, 1680, 1690, 1700, 1725 and 1740. The ones on 1690 kHz apparently were QSOing, but the rest were doing more "proper" programme type outputs. 1660 were rock and pop, and a more dance type electronic music at 1740. The rest were traditional Greek music, which is very listenable in a cold wet Britain in December! It's difficult to grab the names of the Greek pirates when they announce, as its a lot less similar to English than is Dutch. I know that Radio Nicos uses 1690 kHz a lot and another powerful station is Radio Superman.
Back on Twente tonight, and there's a strong signal on 1620 kHz. Schlager type music and some country and western. The announcer was doing a programme with plenty of chat, and I think was identifying as Zender Studio Tricolo or something similar. An enjoyable and relaxing selection of music.
Thanks for the interesting post. A shame the operator of this blog wasn't moved to comment.
Sorry for not commenting sooner .... it was an interesting post. Some of those Greek pirates at the top of end of MW use quite a lot of power and are often as strong as the Dutch pirates.
Many years ago a Finnish DXer called Harri visited some of these Greek pirates. Read about his experiences at: http://www.harriku.com/larissa.htm
The MW Free Radio blog has a list of the Dutch pirates he heard in 2018. It can viewed at https://mwfreeradio.blogspot.com/2019/01/the-class-of-2018.html
Whatever happened to the MW Free Radio blog? Is he still listening?
I think he's still around
