Radio West was a Pirate radio station that broadcast from Mullingar Co. Westmeath.
It started broadcasting in 1981 and closed down in December 30th 1988.
It bought the 10kwAM Transmitter from Chris Carey( Radio Nova) in 1982.
It's most famous Dj was Don Allen who presented a very popular Country Music programme 3 evenings a week.
Great to hear memories of the old "golden age" of pirate radio in the Republic of Ireland before New Year 1989. There was a discussion on an FM Pirate Radio forum about whether the Irish pirates could have defied the Communications law of 1988 "en masse" and caused it to fail. After all, the public was pretty pro-pirate radio (remember the Free Radio Marches of May 1983). The PTT was underfunded and even today, regulation in Ireland is sporadic, with many pirates reportedly left alone for long periods. The problem with this scenario is that, once the law was toughened up, the Irish "superpirates" would have found that their major international advertisers would have dried up anyway - the same thing that happened to Radio Caroline after August 1967 when corporates no longer wanted to do business. It was arguably this consideration that stopped Sunshine, Nova, Q102, ABC etc continuing to broadcast into 1989. Shame though....... .
Also heard on Sunday night was a Russian "hooligan" station on 3106 kHz at 2145 UTC, playing drinking songs in Russian or a Slavic dialect. Decent signal on the Tambov SDR and nice modulation.

Indeed it did Paul. It was just as strong as Radio Nova and Sunshine Radio.
While not as professional ran as these stations it none the less had a excellent Radio anoraks show on a,Sunday morning for one hour
