New date for Big L relaunch

The relaunch of Big L International on 1395 kHz via the Dutch mediumwave transmitter at Trintelhaven is now expected to take place next weekend (14/15 November). A message on the website of KBC Radio, which will be providing the overnight programming, reads:

“We are almost ready for the relaunch of Big L International. We know you can’t wait for it to happen and apologise for the delay but we have been told it will take a little longer than expected to get everything done correctly and on time. However, if everything goes according to plan we hope to be up and running by next weekend. Once again we apologise, but it will be worth the wait.”

KBC Radio boss Eric van Willegen subsequently clarified that ‘next weekend’ means 14/15 November.

Pirate station raided

TWO teenagers have been arrested after police raided a pirate radio station in east London where drugs were found.

The youths aged 16 and 18 were collared for illegally broadcasting from premises at Leywick Street in West Ham.

Officials from Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator, went in with the neighbourhood police team after detecting broadcasts being relayed through an illegal transmitter located in Stephens Parade, nearby.

The signal interfered with legal radio stations and could be picked up as far as Croydon in south London. The equipment worth £45,000 was seized by Ofcom.

The teenagers were held for broadcasting offences under the Wireless & Telecommunications Act, but later bailed pending further inquiries.

Class B drugs were discovered on the premise during the search carried out with a court warrant, Scotland Yard confirmed today. A 25-year-old woman was cautioned for possession.

November 2009 is our 26th birthday. R.W.I will be on the air every weekend on November on the 48 mb around 6325khz. We are planning also some broadcasts on 41mb if possible. We will keep you inform about that later on.

Who's watching you?

The Wireless Waffle blog has produced an interesting article about the reports drawn up by the regulatory administrations monitoring unauthorised use of the shortwave spectrum.

He has been through the report and picked out pirates whose activities have been noted by the monitoring stations. But the report does not make clear what happens once the station is noted . . . very few shortwave pirates tend to be raided, unless there is a specific complaint about QRM.

It is also worth noting there are also many international stations, such as Cairo, North Korea and China, who also transmit outside the international broadcast bands. Nothing seems to happen to them.

As the Wireless Waffler notes, these reports raise a lot of questions . . . but not many answers. He also has a link to the actual ITU monitoring reports themselves which feature a lot more than just the shortwave pirates.

EMR apologises

EMR (European Music Radio) would like to apologise for the problems you may have experienced tuning in to our regular 3rd Sunday of the month transmissions on 6140 KHz at 0900 UTC on Sunday, October 18th 2009.

Listeners who attempted to tune in to EMR via the internet at the same time would have also only heard our 24 hour automated service at the same time.

The lack of our regular 6140 Khz broadcast programmes on the internet at 0900 was our mistake, and we would like to apologise to you if you tried to hear the broadcast shows between 0900 and 1000 that morning. This was a scheduling error on the internet broadcast computer system.

The other scheduled repeats of the 6140 broadcast programme were available on the internet as scheduled.

The lack of programmes from EMR between 0900 and 0915 was beyond our control, as was the abrupt start and end to our transmission. We are currently in discussions with our broadcast facility partner to understand what exactly went wrong and will make an announcement in our next scheduled broadcast on November 15th at 1000 UTC on 6140 KHz.

Radio City returns

Radio City - the Station of the Cars will be back soon via Nexus (formerly known as IRRS) with 150 kW from Slovakia on 9510 kHz on the third Saturday of each month between 10 and 11 hours CET (at the moment corresponding to 0800-0900 GMT).

The first programme will be on the air this Saturday, October 17.

Radio Seagull to broadcast on 558

Dutch-based Radio Seagull announces on its website that, starting on 2 November, it will broadcast a daily two hour show on 558 kHz via Spectrum Radio in London, UK. Currently the station is on the air on 1602 kHz at 1700-0500 UTC on a shared-time basis with sister station Radio Waddenzee based in Harlingen, Friesland, and 24 hours a day via the Internet.

The time of the new broadcast has not yet been disclosed.

FRS Holland to test 39 metres

Dear FRS Friends,

Summer has gone and autumn is ruling. Propagation conditions have reached to a satisfactory level. Time to expand some activity. We haven't decided yet on which date(s) FRS-Holland will take to the air with a regular schedule. But in preparation to that, we have planned a series of tests on 39 metres, just above the well-known 41 mb.

Next Sunday October 4th and 11th FRS-Holland will be carrying out tests on 7600 kHz and a second frequency close to 7600 kHz.

Each Sunday will see 4 hour of tests in two blocks of two hours: 08.00-10.00 UTC and a repeat between 12.00-14.00 UTC.
During each 2 hour morning block we will use two different frequencies, the same ones will be used during the afternoon tests.

We are understandably curious about reception on each frequency. What is the best frequency choice, is there much difference between 7600 and the other channel, is there much difference in reception between the morning and afternoon hours? Questions on which we would like to have your answer.

To collect the most reliable information the test schedule for Sun October 4th will be copied for Sun October 11th. We'd love to hear from you, either by email or via P O Box 2702, 6049 ZG

Keep an eye on 7600 kHz and a second frequency close to that, for instance 7635 and 7650 kHz.

3900: Radio Baken 16 heard @ 1715 playing dance music and then talking to Rob 007 (possibly via Skype). Difficult to hear to high noise level. SINPO 34232.

6055: KBC via Lithuania with final SW broadcast tonight. Not on at scheduled 2130, but was there at recheck @ 2205. Very good signal - SINPO 55544. Let's hope they make it onto 1395 and this isn't the last time they are on the air.

6220: Mystery Radio heard with dance music followed by a DX programme in Italian. Strong signal @ 1730, peaking at S9+10dB. SINPO 54444.

6289: Radio Rainbow heard @ 0910 with ID and playing oldies. Fair signal but some utility QRM. SINPO 33333. Also heard @ 1342 on 6300 announcing it was test transmission, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" played and off. SINPO 34333.

3895: Continental Radio/Overijssel Radio playing Dutch songs @ 2055. Good signal but some utility QRM. SINPO 43433. Heard on 3905 @ 2140 - SINPO 54444, playing music for Dr Tim.

3930: Central Radio heard @ 1940. Just hear snatches of music through the noise. Signal good but audio terrible - very distorted and almost impossible to listen to. Message on Alfa Lima forum said hopes to get problem fixed.

6220: Mystery Radio with pop @ 1945. Good signal. SINPO 44444.

6375: Unid station heard @ 0845 playing a French song, off. Back a few minutes later with a rock song, French song and off again. Someone testing? Maybe RFB. SINPO 34333.

Pirate radio rooftop ban

A man has been banned from every roof top in London after he pleaded guilty to installing pirate radio equipment on a tower block in the city.

Kieran O'Sullivan received the antisocial behaviour order (ASBO) following a successful prosecution by Ofcom.

He also received an 18 week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, a three month curfew, a £1,200 fine, and had his radio equipment seized.
