Pirate radio - its legacy

What did pirate radio give us anyway - and how long will it survive?

How has pirate radio changed since the 60's - and how did pirate radio influence the radio we can listen to today?

The 1960s were a period without any official "pop" radio stations: so pirate radio fulfilled quite a need. Many of them copied the successful top-40 radio formats of the US, and imported them onto the UK airwaves - bringing a welcome sound that was unheard-of to radio listeners. The added 'subversive' nature of these broadcasts were also responsible for their success.
It's claimed that BBC Radio 1 was the government's reaction to the success of these pirates, almost all of which operated outside UK jurisdiction. Radio 1, however, was a part-time service when it started, and suffered for years from a requirement not to play more than five hours of commercially-available music ("needle time") a day: a restriction which, naturally, the pirate radio stations weren't required to adhere to. Nevertheless, pirate radio's influence began to wane with Radio 1's launch.

Some claim that the legalisation of UK commercial radio in the early 1970s was as a direct result of pirate radio activity; others that commercial radio would have happened anyway. Some point to pirate radio being responsible for much of the sound of Radio 1 (many of the network's original presenters were previously pirate broadcasters); others that pirate radio's sound in Europe was simply copied from US top-40 radio anyway.

The growth of commercial radio by the 1980s (and continued success for BBC Radio 1) resulted in many pirate radio stations ceasing operation, and new laws in the mid 1980s were successful in curbing pirate radio further.

Pirate radio in the UK is now not romantically based on a ship - but using transmitters sited at the top of buildings. Many pirate radio broadcasters operate legally as internet radio stations, but, as one industry veteran puts it, the stations "obligingly get re-broadcast on FM by some of their fans". Unlike the 1960s, Ofcom claim that today's pirate broadcasters have links to drug pushers and other illegal operations. A cursory sweep of the dial during a Friday evening in London, however, reveals that Ofcom don't appear to be successful in closing them - as this discussion makes clear.

Pirate radio use in the UK is measured by RAJAR under "other listening", which includes all non-subscriber stations - along with global internet radio and out-of-area stations. 3m people in the UK tune in to "other radio" each week: it has a market share of 2.4%.

Spanish 'pirates' taken off air

THE oldest radio station on the Costa del Sol has been forced to shut down.
Radio fans are upset after discovering that the 24-year-old (English language) station Coastline FM will be taken off the air tonight (Feb 28)  at 6pm.
Bosses at the radio station, based in the Axarquia, admitted that they had been forced to take the decision after being ordered to stop transmitting by the Junta.

Man fined $10,000 for operating on 14.312 MHz

The ARRL reports on the latest enforcement action by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to protect amateur radio spectrum
The ARRL say: "On February 25, the FCC issued a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture (NAL) in the amount of $10,000 to Jared A. Bruegman, ex-KC0IQN, of Bolivar, Missouri. The FCC said that Bruegman “apparently and willfully violated Section 301 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended by operating an unlicensed radio transmitter on the frequency 14.312 MHz in Bolivar, Missouri.”

Bruegman -- who does not currently hold an Amateur Radio license -- was operating in the phone portion of the 20 meter band that is assigned to the Amateur Radio Service on a primary basis; his Amateur Radio license expired in 2010. As a former Technician class licensee, he did not have privileges to operate in that portion of the 20 meter band when he held an Amateur Radio license.

FRS Holland this Sunday

Dear FRS Friends,
The Free Radio Service Holland have planned a full 5-hour broadcast this upcoming Sunday, February 24th. In preparation to that, we tested on 7685 kHz last Sunday February 17th: results were satisfactory and we are confident next Sunday a good signal will be aired over the European airwaves.

Next Sunday FRS-Holland will be on air between 08:52-14:00 UTC/ 09:52- 15:00 CET. The broadcast is on 5800//7600 kHz and on 6070 kHz/ 49 metres as well.  Programme line-up includes all FRS presenters (except Paul Graham) and consists of FRS Magazine, the German Service, FRS Goes DX , Radio Waves and the FRS Golden Show. Ingredients....great music, DX News (also in the German Show!), letters, the day calendar and a number of  radio related items. In addition we pay tributes to two FR persons who recently passed away (German Show, FRS Goes DX part 2). It will be worth while. FRS-Holland brings true free radio into your receiver! Arvid in Norway sent me a recording he made. He writes: "I just wondered if you could help me to identify this jingle, which is infact an e-mail address ? Heard today (Feb 14) at 13.07 UTC on 6305 kHz with good signal. I couldn`t really get the first part of the jingle, the last part is gmx.net."

I have listened and also can't ID the name of the station. Can anyone help?

Pirate radio station raided in Wolverhampton

A man has been arrested in a raid on a pirate radio station in Wolverhampton.

Police and officials from communications regulator Ofcom raided the premises in Crowther Street, Park Village, early on Wednesday.

Equipment was also seized, including a microphone, a mixing desk, a computer and electrical cables.

Police said a man, 33, from Dudley, was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006. He has been released on bail.

They have been on a few times during December and January, first using 819 then 846.

When this was last on air in 2011, British DX Club member Mark Hattan was told by Rhys from OFCOM:

Dear Mark,
Yes, this is a public information broadcast that will operate from 4-8 April and 11-15 April 2011.
 The purpose of this service is threefold. Firstly, it is to advertise the availability of 87.7 MHz for temporary radio services. Secondly, it is to explain about Ofcom and our key responsibilities. And finally, it is to raise awareness about illegal broadcasters and the problems that they cause.
I hope this clears things up.

Another BDXC member, Ian Kelly, monitored the broadcast and reported: "Heard mobile at Crystal Palace, SE London today - recorded loop announcing itself as a public service broadcast from Ofcom on 87.7. Aimed at potential DJs and MCs, warning against pirate radio offences and advertising and encouraging people to grass up anyone involved or report interference. Anyone know the tx site? Not strong at CP - ironically, slight splatter from pirate on 87.6 !"

OFCOM must have decided it was worth doing if they repeating the exercise again this year. It should be on air now until February 17.

Not audible here 2130 January 9 on 6070 via the Twente Online receiver, clear frequency. I did notice that the 6060 Iran transmitter in Arabic was distorted and causing splatter, including on 6070.

Noted on the Twente online receiver at 1350 January 10 S9 to S9+10, very weak and fluttery here, 6005 and 6085 Kall also weaker than usual and fluttery.
