Tune in for tale of pirates - Radio Hauraki

With radio stations in New Zealand falling over one another to out-shock, out-trash and out-rate each other, it's nice to remember that once upon a time it wasn't like that. No, I'm not talking about a century ago, before the advent of broadcast radio. I'm referring to the glory days of Radio Hauraki, when a bunch of hard case larrikins took the bull by the horns and launched a pirate radio station to play rock'n'roll instead of state radio's easy-listening pulp.

A new feature film, 3 Mile Limit, by first-time director Craig Newland, celebrates the unlikely heroes of Hauraki, depicting the genesis of a crazy idea and the antics that ensured it didn't just remain on the mixing board or get washed out to sea. On a broader scale, it's a joyful "kicking against the pricks" , "she' ll be right, mate", "number eight wire", "all for one, one for all" tale of triumph over mediocrity. But at its heart, "3 Mile Limit" is about the lengths Richard Davis (Matt Whelan) will go to establish his illegal station and the limits of his wife Judy's (Belinda Crawley) patience as he drives them out of house and home to fund his dream.

Final transmission of Radio Spaceshuttle

We have sad news to tell you dear listeners! Radio Spaceshuttle is making last programes to be aired in near future. We shall use one of our 76 mb frequencies 3900/ 3905 or 3927 kHz to these transmissions.

We do not know yet times or dates of these transmissions- It might be only one or two different sessions in the end of February or start of March 2014. We would like to have few hours to be aired but that is absolutely not sure.

After these transmissions we shall take our antenna masts and antennas down and do not really know shall we ever return to airwaves  again :(

We shall put our equipment to good warehouse waiting for better times (if there ever are such).

Horizon FM Tenerife on shortwave

The DX world is talking about the appearance of a new station on shortwave - Horizon FM, in Tenerife, Canary Islands.

It has been logged on 5780 kHz and reported is using 75W but planning to increase this to 1 kW.

On the BDXC Yahoo group Mike Barraclough reports: "Hans Johnson has been in telephone contact with Horizon FM and they insist that the transmission is from north part of Tenerife. They carry Horizon FM from Friday evening until 1000 Sunday and then Atlantis FM till 2200. (Mauno Ritola, Feb 16, Cumbre DX Facebook group)."

The station also announces on its English-language website, Twitter and Facebook pages that it is using 102.5/104.5 FM and 5780 kHz.

You can see photos from the station on the Maresme DX blog.

But some people are asking whether it really is coming from the Canaries or from a pirate station in the UK or Ireland rebroadcasting the internet feed. There's more discussion on Garry Steven's free radio board.

Anyway, it all adds to the mystery!

FCC upholds $10,000 fine for Pirate Cat founder as station re-emerges in Berlin

Today [Feb 10] the FCC released an order upholding a $10,000 fine against Dan Roberts, former manager of Pirate Cat Radio, for unlicensed broadcasting. The fine was originally issued in 2011.

Pirate Cat Radio began as an audacious and prominent unlicensed station operating out of a San Francisco cafe, headed up by charismatic leader Dan Roberts who went by the monikers “Monkey” or “Monkey Man.” As the heat from the FCC turned up, Pirate Cat ended actual FM transmission from its cafe studio, becoming an online-only station. However, a third party picked up the Pirate Cat stream and rebroadcast it on the station’s old FM frequency. It was this disassociation between Pirate Cat and the unlicensed FM broadcast that formed the basis for Roberts’ petition for reconsideration of the fine to the FCC.

In upholding the fine, the Commission rejected Roberts’ argument, along with his argument that there was no proof linking him to these broadcasts. The FCC’s reasoning for rejecting them, however, brings forward a novel argument that could threaten a common pirate broadcast strategy.

How a group of Welsh nationalists became pirate radio pioneers

TV show discovers that campaigners broadcast illegal political broadcasts under the banner Radio Ceiliog (Radio Cockerel)  

A group of Welsh nationalists were among the pioneers of illegal pirate radio, a TV programme revealed.

It’s well known that Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg challenged the BBC’s broadcasting monopoly in the 1960s.

Radio Caroline, many of whose DJs went on to set up Radio 1, broadcast from a ship off the Essex coast.

Now the S4C talk show Cadw Cwmni gyda John Hardy is set to reveal how some Welsh nationalist campaigners broadcast illegal political broadcasts under the banner Radio Ceiliog (Radio Cockerel).

In the programme, broadcaster John Hardy interviews Philip Lloyd, one of the activists who campaigned for a party political broadcast allocation for Plaid Cymru [the Welsh nationalist party].

In the 1950s Plaid Cymru started a campaign for an allocation of political broadcasts. Conducting pirate broadcasts was not official party policy, but some party activists turned to breaking the law in a bid to secure Plaid Cymru broadcast time.

 It is possible to get English subtitles. Comments on the BDXC group also seem to indicate it isn't possible to watch the programme outside the UK, while the subtitle button seems to depend on what browser you're using.

The end of the Irish pirate era 25 years ago

The introduction of the Irish wireless and telegraphy act 25 years ago brought to an end the free-for-all on the Irish radio spectrum.

Radiotoday.ie marks the occasion with an article called "The day the music died" which includes a RTE news report from the time (including footage of raids on Nova and Sunshine) and several press cuttings.

The article begins: "A number of pirate radio stations closed 25 years ago today (Dec 30) and tomorrow, including WABC in Donegal and Sunshine in Dublin as the new broadcasting wireless and telegraphy act was introduced. The super pirates KISS, Q102, Radio Dublin, Sunshine Radio, Radio West, ABC, Coast 103 and more were silenced as the then Minister for Communications Ray Burke introduced new legislation aimed at suppressing the stations."

The 1980s saw Irish pirate stations take over the FM, medium wave and shortwave bands. A far cry from the situation today where there are only a handful still active. The only pirate from Ireland still on shortwave is Premier Radio, which can be heard regularly on 6910 kHz.

Pirate radio stations caused chaos for emergency services in Ireland

The Irish Independent newspaper reports:
Pirate radio and TV stations were causing chaos in 1983 for communications systems within the Irish emergency and transport services.

Confidential documents, released from the state archives, showed the government was determined to increase fines to clamp down on the soaring number of pirate stations.
One memo, dated April 23, warned: "Illegal radio stations have caused serious interference to authorised services in this country.

"Formal complaints have been received regarding harmful interference caused by unlicensed stations here to authorised broadcasting stations overseas.

Interference has also been caused to airport fire services, taxiing aircraft and aircraft immediately after take-off, to ambulance and garda radio networks and to radio and television reception."

In a separate memo to Posts and Telegraphs Minister Jim Mitchell, a civil servant warned that there were now 50 illegal radio stations operating in Ireland.
Such was the level of interference that emergency services were being impacted.

Of even greater concern, Dublin Airport had reported a total of 22 incidents in 1982 where radio frequency interference was recorded.

RKNW on shortwave

British medium wave pirate RKNW plans to take to  the airwaves on shortwave on Christmas Day. On its website it announces it will be using 6240 kHz plus a second relay from Germany.

Regular free radio listeners will recognise the names of the presenters: Andy Walker, Chris Ise, Jackie Frost, Stewart Ross and Andy Peters.

There will also be a selection of classic 'radio comedy' shows.

The station is normally heard on 1521 kHz on Sundays broadcasting to south west London.

FRS Holland on 41 metres this Sunday

Next Sunday, December 8th, FRS-Holland will conduct a test broadcast on 7310 kHz/ 41 metres.
The test will last for two hours between 10:00-12:00 UTC/ 11:00- 13:00 CET. We are understandably curious what reception is like in your particular area. Therefore we do hope as many listeners as possible will be tuning our way and send a reception report, either via e-mail or snail mail. Correct reception reports will be verified with our station QSL. You can truly help us by sending in your reception report!

Our next full broadcast will be over the Holiday Season: on Sunday December 29th FRS-Holland will continue a long time tradition, ringing out 2013. It was in the early 1980s that we started with December Xmas broadcasts. Only very few times in the past 33 years, FRS was absent in December.
In the past years we have seen a  decline in the number of listeners willing to participate in our Seasonal broadcast.

We call on you as a faithful FRS friend and listener to take part this year…

First Dutch pirate fined under new policy

The first FM pirate raided under the new Telecom Agency policy, has been fined . 'Club AA' from Gramsbergen  was fined nearly € 10,000, reported the pirate site etherpiraten.com
