My website

Many of you will have probably already visited my website at http://www.freewebs.com/ukdxer/ which is an extension of this blog.

I've uploaded a selection of QSL cards gathered since 1999. You can also find snail mail, email and web addresses for many of the pirate stations. There are also recordings of free radio stations made since I launched this site in March.

In addition, as I've upgraded it, it is also ad-free!

Any comments welcome, either in the guestbook, via this blog or by email to the usual address.

Barretina - the end?

Franja DX reports that the Spanish PTT has now closed down Radio Barretina with a photo of papers and sealed package on his blog.

Meanwhile on the Barretina blog, the station operator has announced his new project - free radio from Mauritania!

He has deleted the previous postings and renamed the blog "Radio Far Int - Catalonian shortwave station in Mauritania."

He says he has a friend in the west African country who tells him there is an abandoned boat with functioning shortwave equipment capable of delivering 2kW of power, with the antenna system intact.

He plans to return to the airwaves in January 2009. Read more about it on his blog.

Is this for real or is it another of Barretina's "jokes?"

Summer Meeting 2008

Wow!! Time surely flies when you're having fun.

Greetings all my dear friends in free radio shortwave land. The time has come to announce the upcoming summer meeting here in the Dutch/Belgian border area. Station operators and listeners are welcome. The meeting last year was a huge success. We will have another one, just like last year's with a barbeque, drinks, fun and laughter and we hope you will come as well.

The meeting will be taking place on the last weekend of June, from Friday 27th non-stop until Sunday afternoon. You can stay the night(s) over in a huge tent with bed (take only a sleeping bag with you), your own tent, carcamper or at a local hotel.

The exact place where it all will be happening will be announced 1 month before the meeting to those that want to come. People who visited us before know that we use a real nice place.

If you are interested please let us know by e-mail or letter!!!!!!! You can get more info on summermeeting2008@hotmail.com.

We hope lots of you will come. It's the place to be!

Greetings from the Borderhunter Summermeeting organisation.

Seems that some PTT man was visiting his home and saying to closing down because the stations was interfering some French maritime station. A new visit on next Monday 5, may just at 9 AM is foresseen to put a seal strap on the Yaesu FT-757 GX transceiver.

Also,he said that no fine was issued at the moment, because the positive collaboration of the operator. An alternative project must be in the mind of the operator.

Feel free to sent your condolences and solidarity to the well known: radiobarretina@hotmail.com

Caroline on shortwave

This from Peter Moore, Caroline station manager, following the station's recent 9290 shortwave broadcast:

The Radio Caroline shortwave transmissions on 9290 with 20kW brought 16 replies from the UK, Italy, Norway, Japan, Greece, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Sweden and South Africa. I also received a report from Germany for 945 and from the United States for 6925. They were all from QSL seekers not listeners in the true sense, the music and presentation was noted for verification not for enjoyment.

I spent three hours writing replies and forwarded the reports to Raimonds in Latvia. Some people sent recordings on cassette or mini CD disc. I have 10 dollar bills and 8 IRCs. Raimonds gifted us the airtime so we will probably break even and of course the geographical spread of the signal was interesting but aside from state broadcasters shortwave really is just a novelty.

Radio Caroline may have a further dabble to see if listeners would come to a permanent shortwave music channel but mostly this is a project we are trying to complete out of respect for our departed colleague Rob Leighton. It has to be considered of course that only among a small anorak clique did anyone know about this broadcast; the reports were from people who discovered the signal and only had a three hour window to do so.

One could assume a better response if the signal was on full time. Rob Leighton loved shortwave and had built, at the time of his death, an almost complete and very efficient transmitter with a final output of 1 kW.

We had a loose arrangement that Raimonds in Latvia would link it in to the big aerial for 9290 and run a regular Caroline service. In his memory we will do our best to finalise that. Of course it will not be a mighty 100 kW but it will be an affordable project.

North American logs

Here's some interesting logs from Joe Wood in Greenback, TN, USA, made last night:

6925u Radio Caroline. 2316-0015+. 28-29 Mar. English. Presumed relay of this station. It is also my first log of the station. Rock music from Aerosmith, Jefferson Starship, David Bowie, and many others that were less well known. Several IDs as "Radio Caroline," and one at 2333 as "The Legend Lives One-Radio Caroline." The programming changed over to a Blues Show with Mr. Charles at 2400. Both segments were great. All of the TC were in synch with GMT, so this was either a live feed to a relay station, or somebody took a great deal of care to match up a recording to the times, or Radio Caroline is now broadcasting on 6925 from the UK. The signal was a great deal stronger and better than any other Europirates I have heard, so I think it was a relay of some kind, but one never knows….. Fair to Good

6925u Victory Radio. *0135-0153*. 29 Mar. English. First log of this station. OM announcer with several mentions of the University of Texas (the other, UT) basketball team. Music by "The Austin Lounge Lizards." Also, "The Eyes of Texas" at s/on. There was a polka and ments of nightspots in Austin where Bob Wills is still the King. Off with ID and Unreadable QSL ancmts. Poor.

Listening to Laser

We have set up a new way of listening to Laser shows on the Internet by using a Flash-based player called uBroadcast.

Surf along to http://www.ubroadcast.com/ to download and install the program. We can be found on the Stations section by clicking through the category/shows folders to "Independent Music Broadcasters/Pop/Pop Variety/Laser Ch 2".

Or else go to http://rustybucketradio.tripod.com/ and click the "Play" symbol under the "Rusty Bucket Radio" title at the top of the screen.

If the "Play" button does not appear, there may be a browser message at the top of the screen instead. This will ask you if you want to install an Active X plug-in which will allow the uBroadcast player to automatically install and start playing a Laser show from the beginning.

If you don't want to hear that show then just click "Play" once more. This will start streaming another show. The audio quality is the best we have ever broadcast on the Internet with some shows in stereo so give it a go !

(info via Laser website)

Well, here's some more ways to catch Laser if the shortwave frequencies aren't coming through.

Wolfman Jack

BBC Radio 4 has a programme about the legendary US DJ Wolfman Jack on tomorrow (Mar 22) at 1030UTC called "In Search of the Wolf."

There is also a long article about him on the BBC website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7307738.stm

(info via Mike Terry, anoraksuk)

Shortwave listeners to KBC will be familiar with the Wolfman who can be heard on the station six days a week.

Barretina blog

Caroline back on Ross Revenge

Easter 2008 live from Ross Revenge

The entire weekend will be hosted by presenters from our second ship, Mi Amigo who all served on board between 1977 and 1980.

This special birthday broadcast starts at 6am on Good Friday and runs until midnight on Easter Monday. You'll be able to watch some of the action via on-board webcams.

There'll be some additional ways to listen this Easter too.

You'll be able to tune in via our friends at Radio Mi Amigo where a special stream will be dedicated entirely to Caroline. They will also be replacing some their regular programmes with ours. Just go to http://www.radiomiamigo.eu/

Caroline will also be available on 9290khz shortwave from Latvia between 1500-1800 on Easter Sunday afternoon.

Please do not attempt to visit Ross Revenge this Easter. We hope to move the ship to a more accessible location soon and look forward to seeing you then.

Radio Caroline will also be on 945kHz tomorrow (Sun) from 2100UTC until Monday at 0400UTC. I believe that's via a transmitter in Latvia.
