News from Britain Radio Int

I have had an email from Roger Davis of Britain Radio International. The station, which first started broadcasting  31 years ago, hasn't been on the air for some time but Roger hopes to return at some stage.

He writes: "I am pleased to say that BRI has not closed down for good, at some stage I will hopefully make some sort of comeback to the SW airwaves, one of the reasons we found it difficult to maintain our regular 2nd/4th Sundays was the loss of JRR relay, Laser Hot Hits kindly stepped in to offer assistance for which we were very grateful and the offer still stands for BRI to be relayed via their TXs, but although I have every intention to bring the station back in some shape or form its unlikely to happen in the immediate future."

He says any return will be announced on the BRI website which has been updated.

He concludes: "Send my best wishes to all the loyal listeners who have supported BRI over the past 31 years... BRI will return in the not too distant future."

FRS Holland this Sunday

On Sunday (June 19th) FRS-Holland will be on air with full programming. Opposite to our usual broadcasts, this one will take place in the evening hours between 16:52- 22:00 UTC/ 18:52- 24:00 CEST.
FRS-Holland will be on 7685kHz avoiding 7600 and 7595 interference during the first part of the broadcast.
7685 isn't affected by adjacent channels being used by other stations. Especially during the last part of the broadcast it will be interesting if & how signals will be received to the east (Russia, Ukraine etc.).
We will take our time...it'll be an 'old fashioned' long FRS broadcast: 5 hours!!. Our full staff will be involved including Paul Graham who was absent for quite some time. This time we will deviate from the usual schedule: 3 blocks of resp. 60s, 70s and 80s tracks, a DX Show and a show with mostly tunes. We will handle no letters, there's no Phrase that Pays, the music comes first! Although each show will include 1 or 2 short radio related items !

We like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you who responded to our brief evening tests May 22nd (7685).
These two 15 min. tests were widely heard across Europe and beyond. For 30 minutes we received some 30 reports.
And last but not least: we will soon start replying to the many, many listeners who responded to one or more of our 30th Anniversary broadcasts back in October & November 2010 and February 2011.
FRS has produced a special & informative commemorative 30th Anniversary booklet which will be available to each and everyone who sent a report/ letter. This booklet is almost finished. So please have a little more patience, you will get your special QSL card(s) and the booklet.

Just wanted to let you know that the 2011 edition of the Pirate Radio Annual is now available and I just received the copies last week. At 184 pages, it's nearly 60 pages longer than last year's edition.

This year's edition includes a couple of “articles” in the front ("pirate" beacons, history of '60s pirate WKKD, 1710-kHz Review), 161 North American station entries, and 13 European station entries. Paperback, 5.5” x 8.5” trim, color glossy cover

The CD is just like last year (except that all clips are new): Clips from 84 different stations in North America and Europe. Nearly all clips were from 2010. The CD-R is in standard audio format. If you use a tight slot-loading CD drive (such as in a Mac laptop) and don't want a label on your CD, just let me know.

Top FM pirate stations in London

"All Crews author Brian Belle Fortune lists his top ten pirate radio stations...

Knowledge (magazine) asked me to compile a list of top ten pirates most influential to the jungle / drum & bass scene. Where do you start? How do you choose? Lists are often difficult since they're highly subjective. People tend to big up a station as it's the one they've always listened to - even if only out of habit. Does longevity rule over cultural significance? Or are the best stations the ones which broadcast passion, music and vibes, attracting and retaining an extremely loyal following?

The best stations weave compulsive musical webs through our lives. Switch on and magic floods out your speakers. The underground music we know and love would never of reached the global prominence it has without the support of the pirates.

Most listeners will be unaware of all the shenanigans involved in keeping a pirate radio station on air. Government agents from Ofcom whose search and destroy mission it is target illegal broadcasters, admit a certain admiration for pirates: "It's not easy to set up a station and broadcast, yet they achieve it, week in, week out."

Radio Caroline features in the top 10, while the rest are from the urban/dance music scene in London from the early pioneers in the 1980s up to today. There is video and clips from some of these stations.

Radio Nord Revival back on the air

Radio Nord Revival will be on the air 24/7 during the weekend of May 27-29 on MW 603 and 1512 kHz plus on SW at times which will be announced before regular transmissions start. Programmes are in Swedish unless otherwise noted and will contain lots of vintage Radio Nord-jingles and commercials, music from bygone years and recorded interviews with former Radio Nord staff. Also up-to-date newscasts will be heard every hour on the hour.


The station's blog reports today it will be on the air on 1512 this morning, 603 from 1600 UTC (1800 Swedish Summer Time) and 7485 from 1600-1800 UTC (1800-2000 SST) and 9940 from 1800-2000 UTC (2000-2200 SST).

Tornado knocks The Free Radio Network offline

The Crystal Ship blog reports: "On Sunday May 22, The Free Radio Network, one of the leading forums covering pirate radio in North America, was knocked offline by the tornado that ravaged Joplin, Missouri.

The F.R.N. website is hosted on a web server owned by John Cruzan, FRN founder, who lives in Joplin. The tornado destroyed much of the telecommunications infrastructure in Joplin, reportedly cutting off telephone landlines, internet and cellphone coverage to most of the area.

For 24 hours, Cruzan's fate was unknown. Pirate hobbyists who tracked the path of the storm reported that it had passed very close to Cruzan's home. There was much concern for the safety of Cruzan and his loved ones.

Thankfully, we can now report that Cruzan and family are safe! As reported via 'Cosmik Debris' on the HF Underground, Cruzan responded to Kracker via Facebook with this message: We are fine, no damage at all, My parents home was leveled but they were not hurt, we are busy trying to dig out their stuff for now, thanks for thinking of Us!"  (May 23 at 10:22pm)"

FCC crackdowns on rogue broadcasters

One way to free up spectrum is to shut down rogue broadcasters. Federal Communications Commission agents have been busy this month (in the USA), issuing more than a quarter-of-a-million dollars in fines. A majority have targeted pirate radio operations.

So far in the month of May, the FCC has issued $258,000 in fines; $141,000 for operation of unlicensed radio transmitters. On May 5, alone, the commission fined five pirates a total of $50,000. Other violations involve failure to maintain functional Emergency Alert System equipment, inadequately maintained transmitter and tower facilities, excessive power levels and improper record-keeping.

Merseyland Alternative Radio raided last weekend

MAR posted this message on the Garry Stevens board earlier this week:

"MAR - Merseyland Alternative Radio raided by the authorities on Saturday 14th May 2011

Sorry to all of our faithful listeners for the lack of any news postings at the weekend and for the lack of any AM transmissions from late afternoon onwards on Saturday 14th May, but unfortunately one of the MAR transmitter locations (on 1314 AM) was raided by Ofcom and a lot of expensive equipment was seized. As a precaution our other AM transmitter location (on 1395 AM) was switched off. For the rest of the weekend we continued on the web only via our streams.

For at least the next couple of weekends we will probably be on via our web streams only. So please understand this, MAR hasn't gone away and programmes will continue and hopefully we will be back on the AM band very soon. It's just that once you lose a good transmitter location they are very hard to replace and there aren't that many volunteers!

MAR would like to thank all of its regular listeners and please let it be known that your support is most appreciated. As we keep saying 'your texts and emails are our wages, we don't get paid for doing any of this' and indeed it costs a small fortune to run MAR, so please keep on listening and please keep supporting one of the last few remaining traditional old style AM land based pirates in the UK! Pirate from Malta?

I had an email from Terry in Newfoundland who was intrigued by a station on 6933 announcing itself as Radio Malta.

He writes: "JonM and I heard a station last night (May 18) which IDed as "pirate radio station Radio Malta, in the middle of the Meditteranean, where all the best ...".  It was on 6933 kHz am, and was heard from 2327-0044 c/d.  Lots of oldies (a listener in New Hampshire recognized some Dione Warwick), and what sounded like pre-recorded IDs.  Signal strength and fading patterns were consistant with the signal originating in Europe.

I have uploaded the file with the best ID to  http://www.mediafire.com/?g8layz216i9lj7s.  (The ID is at 11:56 on the file.)  To me, the announcer seems to have a British accent (I would welcome a second opinion on that), so I was thinking it might be someone from the UK, perhaps on holiday or working there."

2011 Pirate Annual

Andrew Yoder in the USA writes: "Just a note that I put together a small book that is somewhat like the Pirate Radio Directories of the 1990s. Those books were mostly profiles of all of the different North American pirates on the air.

This book also mostly profiles North American pirates, so it will primarily be of interest to North American DXers and those who listen (or want to) listen for North American pirates.

It does include profiles of the "easiest European Pirates to hear in 2010." There was no scientific basis for which stations were in here (but they had to be heard by more than just Terry & Dave...because they hear everything!). The stations included in this edition were Amica, Atlantic, Black Arrow, Black Bandit, Borderhunter, Cupid, Geronimo SW, Mike, Mystery, Marconi, Orion, Spider. Also included in the North American section are WNKR, Radio Ramona, and Radio Rainbow International, which were relayed over here.

Whew! Just wanted to let you know that everything's been sent off to the printer. Thanks for all of the positive comments! The extra 56 pages added more time than last year...or maybe I'm slowing down faster than I had realized in my old age.

Here's the updated info: A couple of “articles” in the front, 161 North American station entries, and 13 European station entries. Same specs as last year (paperback, 5.5” x 8.5” trim, color glossy cover), but 184 pages.

The CD is just like last year (except that all clips are new): Clips from 84 different stations in North America and Europe. Nearly all clips were from 2010. The CD-R is in standard audio format. If you use a tight slot-loading CD drive (such as in a Mac laptop) and don't want a label on your CD, just let me know.
