Two new QSLs arrived today. One from German station Hitmix and the other from a new station heard for the first time this weekend, Radio Felix.

In an email, Radio Felix said he operated last in the early 1990s. In those days he used the name Lowland, but he added he is nothing to do with the current Radio Lowland. He was using 10 watts.

FRS Holland returns this Sunday

After a few months' silence FRS-Holland will be on air with a test on Sunday May 4. The test will be on 7700 kHz and will be aired twice:

1) 07:52- 09:00 UTC/ 09:52- 11:00 CEST
2) 17:52- 19:00 UTC/ 19:52- 21:00 CEST

In case 7700 kHz cannot be used for some reason, there are a few alternative freqs you could try: 7685, 7705 or 7715 kHz.

We are understandably curious how reception is in your area. We've done antenna maintenance as well as carried out a few modifications on the modulator. So we would be happy to hear from you about reception
quality including signal strength and modulation (loudness, quality).

Correct reports will be verified with our standard colour QSL showing the offical FRS logo.

FRSH hopes to return with a full broadcast early June. Unfortunately the proposed February 23 broadcast

Pirate radio station raided in Somerset

A suspected pirate radio station operating from the centre of Taunton, Somerset, has been closed down following a raid by police and OFCOM officers.

Town Centre Neighbourhood officers and members of OFCOM, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, executed a warrant under the Wireless and Telegraphy Act 2006.

Computers and broadcasting equipment was seized during the operation in the High Street area, police say.

Police were called in after complaints about Rage FM, which broadcast junk music and political comment, including expletives.

WR International QSL card

This QSL was received in the post for an email report sent in January. WR International is a difficult catch in the UK due to its high frequency but was heard quite well on the Twente SDR receiver in The Netherlands.

In addition to the QSL card, I received a WRI pen and calendar plus a personal letter. The station has been on the air for 20 years, has a power output of 35 watts fed into a wire dipole antenna and broadcasts live every Sunday morning from 0800-1100 UTC on 12257 kHz.

We moved time of taking our antennas down because of Pirate Contest organized by Norrköpings distanslyssnare starting 11th April. So listeners will have a little change to hear last programes from Radio Spaceshuttle! We promise to have some special content in our last tarnsmissions! I wish you will like'em. Each transmissions will last 0,5-1 hour.   First tests perhaps around 18 UTC (=21 in Eastern Europe, 20 Central Europe, 19 in UK).  And after that irregular times during the night

Happy Birthday Radio Caroline

Fifty years ago  tomorrow marks the day Radio Caroline took the airwaves with regular programmes, and changed British radio forever. There's been quite a lot written and on the radio about the anniversary but very little on the TV. I thought we might have even got a documentary. But it seems not to be.

But ITV's Meridian service in the south of England has done an eight minute report on the anniversary. Here's the link:

Suburban pirate radio station raided

A pirate radio station based from a suburban terrace in Stonecot [Sutton, Surrey] was shut down in a raid this morning (Tuesday). Police and officers from communications regulator Ofcom swooped on the house in Morley Road today.

They found a PC hooked up to a tool called a link transmitter that allowed users to convert an internet signal into a radio signal. The person who set up the system was using the kit to broadcast FM radio via a link to an aerial on the top of Chaucer House in Central Sutton.

It is believed the person who set up the system was charging DJs to let them broadcast via it. Officers shut down the system and seized the equipment from both the house and the top of Chaucer House. No-one was arrested.

Pirate radio contest

NDL has for several years been thinking about a DX listener contest - and now is the time.

The contest begins Friday April 11, 2014 at. 1200 UTC and ends on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 2400 UTC. Frequencies: short and medium wave

Listen to as many pirate stations as possible. Send reports and count the responses received.

The competition is primarily designed for the Scandinavian countries, but also participants from other countries are welcome. For the Nordic participants apply the competition as SM and NM, individually and in teams.

Easter is one of those times of year that pirate radio transmissions are most intense.

European Music Radio, HLR & Radio City Relays

Dear Listeners,
The following Relays are on the air this weekend.

Radio City will be on the air Friday March 14th on 7290 kHz via IRRS from Romania with 150 KW, and via Challenger Radio, Italy on 1368 kHz at 19.00 to 20.00 UTC with 10 KW.
Radio City will also have a repeat Transmission on Saturday February 15th between 09.00 to 10.00 UTC on 9510 kHz.
There is also the weekly transmission via Radio Mercurs in Riga, Latvia on 1485 kHz on Saturday evenings at 20.00 to 21.00 UTC.
The 4th Saturday of the month there is a transmission via Hamburger Lokalradio on 7265 kHz (carrier and upper side band) at 13.00 to 14.00 UTC

Tune in for tale of pirates - Radio Hauraki

With radio stations in New Zealand falling over one another to out-shock, out-trash and out-rate each other, it's nice to remember that once upon a time it wasn't like that. No, I'm not talking about a century ago, before the advent of broadcast radio. I'm referring to the glory days of Radio Hauraki, when a bunch of hard case larrikins took the bull by the horns and launched a pirate radio station to play rock'n'roll instead of state radio's easy-listening pulp.

A new feature film, 3 Mile Limit, by first-time director Craig Newland, celebrates the unlikely heroes of Hauraki, depicting the genesis of a crazy idea and the antics that ensured it didn't just remain on the mixing board or get washed out to sea. On a broader scale, it's a joyful "kicking against the pricks" , "she' ll be right, mate", "number eight wire", "all for one, one for all" tale of triumph over mediocrity. But at its heart, "3 Mile Limit" is about the lengths Richard Davis (Matt Whelan) will go to establish his illegal station and the limits of his wife Judy's (Belinda Crawley) patience as he drives them out of house and home to fund his dream.
