Marconi Radio Int returns to the air

This message comes to you from Marconi Radio International (MRI) which, after an absence of more than 15 years,  returned to the air  on 15th August 2015. Although the signal was weak, the first three test broadcasts have been already heard in Bulgaria, Germany, Scotland and The Netherlands.

The next test broadcast is scheduled on 25th August 2015, from approximately 1700 to 2030 UTC. Our frequency is 11390 kHz and power in the region of 30 watts. Test broadcasts consist of non stop music and station identification announcements in Italian, English, Spanish and Catalan but it is possible that old programmes are aired, too

And prizes and printed QSLs will be sent during first weeks of October!  Sorry for great delay, but we have actually not received last reports got to our Herten Box 2702  during our contest time (January-June). So we had to wait that every reports will be with in the lottery and when counting amount of reports everyone has sent to us!

The new pirate radio crackdown: 400 stations closed in the past two years

"The unique character of British popular music owes a lot to pirate radio. In the 1960s, the original pirates illicitly brought pop music to the shores of Britain, broadcasting from ships in international waters and forcing an anachronistic BBC to launch Radio 1 in response. From the 1980s, pirate radio saw the genesis of British underground culture, as transistors on top of towerblocks became the only places broadcasting reggae, rave, jungle, drum’n’bass, garage, grime and dubstep.

But piracy has always been at odds with the law. Earlier this month, Ofcom revealed that in London alone they have seized 400 suspected pirate radio setups over the past two years. Ofcom’s head of Spectrum Enforcement, Clive Corrie, says that mostly they stop stations broadcasting because they “interfere with vital radio communications used by the emergency services and aircraft systems, and frequently cause damage to property”. This is a problem specific to the capital, since “of the 100 or so stations illegally broadcasting in the UK, around 70 of them are in London”."

400 pirate radio set ups shut down in London in past 2 years

Regulators have raided nearly 400 suspected pirate radio setups in London over the last two years, the Standard can reveal.

Figures released by Ofcom in response to a Freedom of Information request show nearly a quarter of the raids took place in Haringey, north London, while 90 resulted in equipment being seized.

Lambeth, south London, was the next biggest offender, with more than 50 raids on suspected pirates between April 2013 and March this year.

The communications regulator says internet radio and the introduction of community broadcasting licences have taken away some of the incentive for pirates to broadcast.

Radio Merlin Int closes down

A message on Radio Merlin International's
 Facebook page:

"Due to reasons beyond our control Radio Merlin International has now closed down .Thanks for all your support over the years and the many reports over the years ,and your friendship.We will sadly miss being on the air.Thanks once again for tuning into us .Paul Watt."

In the comments he adds that they lost the transmitter site and ran out places for the aerial.

Very sad news as RMI brought a good and varied choice of music to 48 metres.

QSL from Radio Barracuda

I've received a QSL from Radio Barracuda in Italy. This station is not to be confused with another Italian shortwave station called Radio Barraquda.

Radio Barracuda broadcasts on 6240 kHz in AM some evenings while Radio Barraquda is heard on many different freqiencies, often in SSB mode.

Britain's pirate radio stations are not going down without a fight

If you climb through a certain gap in a hedge on the crest of Somerset's Blackdown Hills, you'll stumble on a crime scene. Tied to a branch in the canopy of an old birch tree is the transmitter for Rage FM, Taunton's only pirate radio station. Owning it could get Alfie, the proprietor, two years in prison.

The former BBC Devon employee and self-styled community broadcaster, 35, isn't too worried about that. Pointing out local landmarks around the ripe green fields that undulate into the valley below, he looks and sounds like a posh West Country farmer surveying his lands. But to the station's 3,000 listeners, he's their favoured supplier of political polemic, flood warnings and jazz music.

New shortwave station Euro Radio to begin broadcasting in August

An new station called Euro Radio 6205 is due to start broadcasting on August 1 with 2kW.  On its
Facebook page it says: "Get your programmes and podcasts on air to a pan european audience with Euro Radio. our rates are the lowest in Europe!. The more airtime you buy the cheaper it gets! Email for details euroradio@gmx.com."

Is it a pirate or a licensed station - it is not clear?
