On August 15, let's celebrate one year since MRI returned back on the air  on the occasion of Ferragosto national holiday! Tune in to MRI  Thank you for your participation!

Every year many Italians observe Assumption Day, also known as Ferragosto, on August 15. This year the national holiday of Ferragosto  (which celebrates the Catholic belief that God assumed the Virgin Mary into Heaven at her death) coincides with the first anniversary since MRI,  after 15 years of dormancy, returned back to the airwaves  on 15 August 2015.

Although most of Italians go to the beach (or mountains) for Ferragosto, MRI will be on the air with a special broadcast as follows: from  0800 to 1000 UTC  on 7700 kHz USB and from 1030 to 1530 UTC on 15025 kHz.

To mark this anniversary, we’ll air  “Ferragosto Show”, with music, interviews and listeners' feedbacks.

But that is not all. In addition to our weekly DX shows  "Italian Shortwave Panorama" (in English) and  "Panorama Onde Corte" (in Italian),  we'll be airing a repeat of our special programme  in Italian produced, in cooperation with Radio Europe  and IBC – Italian Broadcasting Corporation, to celebrate the  role of free shortwave radio on the occasion of 2016 World Radio Day.

We take this opportunity to invite shortwave listeners and DXers, in conjunction with this Special Ferragosto broadcasts  on August 15, 2016, to send your greetings in a form of audio clip (mp3-file) or  text  to marconiradiointernational@gmail.com. We'll  air  and include  your greetings in our next MRI Newsletter.

As usual MRI encourages reception reports from listeners. Audio clips (mp3-file) of our broadcasts are welcome! We QSL 100% and of course a  Special  Ferragosto  QSL verification will be sent to acknowledge reports about reception of above mentioned broadcasts.

Radio Armada wins QSL award

The long-running Dutch medium wave pirate Radio Armada has been voted as the first recipient of the free radio QSL Award at this year's Dutch summer meeting for free radio listeners and operators, held a few weeks ago.

Listeners had been voting for which station they believed offered the best QSL service and the result was announced at the meeting. The station operator received a  Swedish crystal vase and a bouquet of flowers.

The award was sponsored by the Shortwave Combination Holland free radio station and Swedish DX clubs MKVK and VDXK.

I was able to listen to Radio Armada on Saturday evening on 1667 kHz and sent him a reception report. I received a quick reply with an eQSL, letter and photo of him with his award.

Mi Amigo special broadcast

Thursday July 21 19:00 - 22:00 [cet] -  the Mi Amigo Shortwave AM Radio Event of the Year!                    

At the beginning of this month we introduced many great improvements to our station, such as: a new international Saturday schedule, the arrival of Mi Amigo legend Peter van Dam and a new improved 192k high quality web stream.

To celebrate this new chapter in our history at the start of our new summer season, our entire crew of DJ's and technical staff a will all meet at our Short Wave Transmission Centre in beautiful Kall-Krekel, Germany for a group BBQ and a 3 hour live broadcast to Europe and the world!

For this special occasion we will not only broadcast on our regular European 6005 kHz (49m band) and the 1485 AM (from Riga), but this live show will also be relayed to the world by a 100 kW Shortwave transmitter in Armenia, on 11.850 kHz (25m band)!

This powerful 100kW transmitter has 12 different directional antenna configurations and will be able to reach parts of the world outside Europe where normally we are not received. So we intent to properly introduce ourselves and the station to all the new listeners worldwide.

The 3 hour show will feature reports and details about the unique vintage Shortwave Broadcast Centre in Kall, our transmitters, the buildings and antenna's. We'll talk about today's Free Radio and our station, where we come from and about our big plans for the nearby future. We'll introduce everyone in our excellent team.

Our DJs will tell stories -and answer questions- about their time on the glorious radio ships and play some of their special favourite records.
It will be a fun night, a real get-together of our AM radio loving international DJs and our listeners. The broadcast will be mainly in English with some Dutch, German and French as well. The music will also bring back some wonderful Free Radio memories.

New shortwave station Radio Star from Italy sent this attractive eQSL for my report on reception last Friday. The operator also sent this station information:

"Radio Star is basically my own radio station, also if it is a REAL radio station here in North Italy, it is not a commercial one, so still pretty free.
It is on air from 2008 on digital terrestrial, with a coverage area of 15 Millions people here and few millions also in USA , in NYC area ( I made an accord with another station) , that is not bad for a radio station that was born in my attic in 1993 through pirate FM low power (really low... less than one mile). Now I am trying with Short Waves, that I listen too from basically always. I am 38 years old but I started to play with radios before start to write. :)

You can listen my program every Friday at 21:00 UTC.

Greetings!

Thank you very much for the great feedback that we had from the first broadcast on shortwaves of RADIO STAR INTERNATIONAL on 6070 Khz past July 1st at 20:00 (8.00 PM UTC).

From this Friday,  July 8th, we will have a weekly broadcast, but this time at 21:00 UTC (9:00 PM UTC) due the strong interferences that last time we had from Vatican Radio from 20.40 UTC (Arab programs from Vatican transmitter on the same frequency).

It is also active a 24/7 streaming with the reply of weekly program and some music , here Radio Star International Website  or through our facebook group here https://www.facebook.com/groups/129309598258/?ref=ts&fref=ts

Just a short reminder of our regular weekly brodcasts on Wednesdays. Marconi Radio International will once again be on air tomorrow 6 July 2016, as follows:

Our broadcasts include some kind of programmes now sadly missing from most shortwave radio stations:  an old style DX show in English “Italian Short Wave Panorama”  and Italian "Panorama Onde Corte" with a feature on Radio Dabanga and Radio Tamuzuj, as well as  a mailbag programme in Italian. Our  station identification  announcements are not only in English and Italian but also in French, German, Japanese, Spanish and Catalan.

North American pirate radio annual 2015-16

American DXer Andrew Yoder reports: "The 2015-16 Pirate Radio Annual is now nearly finished and I'm taking advance orders for copies of the book... Just finished the cover tonight and the files are going to the printer tomorrow. From there, the finished books should be ready in 4-6 weeks."

Although the 230-page book concentrates on American stations, it also features Euro-pirates heard in North America.

Our  station identification  announcements are not only in English and Italian but also in French, German, Japanese, Spanish and Catalan.

Radio Sylvia QSL

This eQSL received from Radio Sylvia for a broadcast via Channel 292. In an email the station included some information about its history:

"The station started broadcasting back in 1977 as a pirate. We were active for many years on FM, medium wave and short wave. In 1984 Radio Sylvia was raided by the German authorities and we were sentenced to heavy fines. After that we changed our name to Radio Scorpio and were relayed on a regular basis by Belgian, Scottish and Irish short wave stations.

In 2009 we restarted Radio Sylvia as an internet station. We are now broadcasting 24/7 with studios located in Hamburg, Germany. In addition to our online activities, short wave transmissions are conducted as well on every first Saturday of a month on 6070 kHz from 19:00 to 21:00 CEST.

By the way: On 2nd July we'll celebrate our 39th anniversary with a big live show. You'll be able to hear it on 6070 kHz from 18:00 to 21:00 CEST and online from 18:00 CEST until "open end". 

Our aim has always been (and still is) to provide a musical alternative to the "official" pop music radio stations. We focus on non-mainstream music and also support little-known bands and artists worldwide.

QSLs from Coast FM Tenerife and WREC (Radio Free East Coast)

A couple of new eQSLs landed in my Inbox in the last few days. The Coast FM one is for the relay via a transmitter from UK/Ireland. It also relays programmes from Energy FM and Atlantis FM, also based in Tenerife.

A quick reply also from American station WREC who said he first started broadcast in 1992 until 1998 before returning to the airwaves last year. Recently he has been heard directly in Italy, Germany & the UK and often relays European and other American pirates. The operator said he was interested in relaying other stations. He can be contacted at wrecradio@gmail.com

Unlike previous information, MARCONI RADIO INTERNATIONAL will not be on the air on 2 June 2016. Instead a number of test broadcasts will be aired on Wednesday, 1 June 2016 on some new frequencies according to the following schedule (All times in UTC): 1800-1900 on 9290 kHz,  1930-2030 on 15070 kHz and 2100-2200 on 6390 kHz.

Ofcom commissions research into pirate radio

Ofcom has commissioned research into pirate radio: There is an anonymous online questionnaire you can fill in.

"Dr Angus Nurse Director of Programmes in Criminology and Sociology at Middlesex University is working with his colleague Dr Robin Fletcher to examine the phenomenon of pirate radio in the 21st century...The aim of the research is to, so far as is possible, examine the extent to which pirate radio remains a contemporary social and regulatory problem. We are examining why ‘pirate’ radio persists despite the existence of legal alternatives to unlicensed broadcasting. The research, which was commissioned by the regulator Ofcom, also aims to assess both why people continue with ‘pirate’ broadcasting on FM radio, as well as the reasons why audiences continue to consume ‘pirate’ radio broadcasts...We would like to hear from as many listeners and members of the public as possible."

New low-power medium wave licences in Netherlands

One of the first stations to go on the air under the new legislation may be the long time pirate – Atlantis Radio 1521 – in Friesland. They got a license (?) from Commissariaat voor de Media in March 2016, and they recently purchased a new 75 W AM transmitter (300 W PEP). Marconi Radio International on air today

As from Wednesday, 4 May 2016 Marconi Radio International will start a regular service according to the following schedule:

On Wednesdays, from 1800 to 1900 UTC, from 2000 to 2100 UTC, and from 2200 to 2300 UTC on 7690 kHz USB mode (alternative frequencies: 7700 and 7790 kHz).

The power is in the region of 100 watts. We have standardized our transmissions: there are now only broadcasts 60 minutes long. The first half hour is always a DX programme in English (Italian Shortwave Panorama) followed by mailbag (or DX) show in Italian or non-stop music interspersed with announcements in English, Italian, German, Spanish and Catalan.

MRI encourages reception reports from listeners. Audio clips (mp3-file) of our broadcasts are welcome! We QSL 100%. IOur electronic mail address is: marconiradiointernational@gmail.com - Please don’t forget to include your postal address as some lucky listeners will also receive a printed QSL card.

New Zealand's Radio Hauraki pirate Chris Parkinson dies

Radio New Zealand reports:
   
Radio Hauraki co-founder Chris Parkinson has died at the age of 74. He was one of the four original directors of the country's first pirate radio station, which broke the government monopoly on radio broadcasting in the 1960s.

Broadcaster Chris Parkinson was a co-founder of pirate radio station Hauraki.  The original Radio Hauraki broadcast from a boat moored in the Hauraki Gulf outside the three-mile territorial limit. Its popularity eventually persuaded the government to relax the regulations around radio broadcasting, allowing other private stations to begin transmission.

Chris Parkinson went on to become involved with talk station Radio Pacific, and worked in the Australian radio industry. His voice was regarded as the one of the best in broadcasting. He was the recipient of many awards during his career, including the Pater Award for the Golden Voice of Australasia in 1987.

Mr Parkinson was also the well-known continuity voice for TVNZ News and Current Affairs, and other programs throughout the 1990s. He died in Auckland.

Some changes to Channel 292's schedule

British DX Club member Alan Gales writes:

Some recent changes noted on the Channel 292 schedule:

1700 UTC on Thursday 28th - 'Radio Back in Time' (new!).

1300 UTC on Saturday 30th - 'Groovelines' (monthly).

1700 UTC on Saturday 28th - 'Free Radio Skybird'.

1900 UTC on Thursday 5th & 11th of May - 'Just Right' (new).

Note: these are just in addition to the regular weekly programmes, such as 'From the Isle of Music' and 'DigiDX', and a full list of the current schedules for all the channels' programmes can be found at: http://www.channel292.de/schedule-for-bookings/

Some stations have vanished from the schedule, amongst them are 'Authentic Rock Radio', and the 'Christian Media Network', which had been running on some weekday afternoons. Radio Northern Ireland now only seems to be available on WRMI, though it does seem to be well received in more distant places on 15770 and 9955 kHz now.

RNI station operator Jordan Heyburn was recently featured on the programme 'World Report' on CBC Radio in St John's, Newfoundland, after he listened to CKZN shortwave 6160 kHz (which is situated in St John's, and which relays the medium wave signal from CBC NL's Happy Valley Goose Bay station). The Shortwave Service have now added a repeat of the 'Radio Canada International' broadcast, which appears on Saturdays at 1400 on 7310 kHz, and the repeat can now be heard on Sundays at 1400 UTC on 6005 kHz as well (listeners who can't receive their signal can still listen to the live streams via the Shortwave Service website).
