Radio Igloo to broadcast via WRMI

On Monday February 7 at 01.00-02.00 UTC on 5950 kHz Radio Igloo will be on air again from WRMI's 100 kW-transmitter in Florida.

Thanks to the Texas Radio Shortwave team, we have the opportunity to reach the whole world with our program.

The program is a mix of music by Swedish artists and DX-information. Also this time it is a co-production with the Westcoast DX-Club in Gothenburg, Sweden. Maybe not the best time of day for listeners in Europe, so set your alarm-clocks.

Appeal for more audio clips for new Dr Tim tribute show

Texas Radio Shortwave produced a programme of audio clips featuring some of Doctor Tim's many stations, which was broadcast by Channel 292, Radio Monique and Mike Radio.

Now TRSW wants to produce a second show  using audio from the 24 stations not included in the first effort.

"We hope to air the program this spring.

Radio Intersound eQSL

 

A great eQSL received from Radio Intersound, who was back on the air yesterday for the first time since 2015. 

In his email he writes: "The power today on the 6.285 was only 10 Watt carrier. I designed my antenna in such a way, that this wire can give an excellent SWR from the entire MW to the 48 meter SW-band. It is a simple L-antenna, 9 meters high and about 13 meters long (almost a half wave to 48 meters), which is also adapted to a simple home-built LC tuner with a long range. As earth I use 4 long earth radials over the ground, which one of them is connected to a wide ditch."

Shortwave pirates heard in 2021

 As we are into a new year, I've done my annual look at the European shortwave pirates heard during the past 12 months. In 2021 I logged 147 shortwave pirates - down slightly from the 153 heard in 2020.

As usual, the most stations came from The Netherlands, with this figure staying quite steady with 76 logged last year compared with 74 in 2020.

The second most active country was the United Kingdom with 13 stations logged, up one from 2020.

Some of the stations were only on air once or twice while others made regular appearances on the free radio bands throughout the year.

One of the most frequent, Charleston Radio International went off air last month with transmitter problems but hopes to be back in the next few months, while another, Laser Hot Hits, has been missing from shortwave for much of the year, although is still continuing online, while Merlin was raided in September and has been off air since but he is also streaming online.

And in November the free radio world mourned the loss of German free radio operator Werner, known as Dr Tim. He broadcast under many different names, as well as his own. Last year I logged 23 of his stations, plus his broadcasts as Radio Dr Tim. 

Some other stations also like to use different names like Johnny Tobacco (Triple L, Abu Dhabi, Black Bandit) and Ronalisa (Ronnie AM, Radio Tesla). 

In 2021 I heard shortwave pirates scattered across 15 European countries.

For this list I haven't included relays of internet or licensed medium wave stations. Also I haven't counted licensed low power stations, like Piepzender, or their relays. This is not an exhaustive list - some stations might have been on air, but I didn't hear them.

The shortwave free radio scene still seems quite healthy, although many of these stations consist of just music and jingles without anyone behind the mic.

FRS Holland Christmas broadcast this Sunday

 

Dear FRS-Holland friend,

Our traditional December broadcast is just around the corner!

The broadcast will be on Sunday December 19th. FRS-Holland will continue a long time tradition, ringing out the year.

It was in the early 1980s that we started with December Xmas broadcasts. Only very few times in the past 41 years, FRS was absent in December.

The broadcast will run from 0852-1330 UTC on 5800, 6185 & 7700 kHz. There may be a repeat of one or a few shows on 5800 & 7700.

It will be worthwhile tuning our way, so we invite you to join us next Sunday!

Texas Radio Shortwave to produce special show in memory of Dr Tim

 

In January, TRSW will air a special program commemorating the many pirate stations produced by Germany's Dr. Tim.

I have had a reply from new medium wave station Radio Augusta International, based in Ivory Coast, who has been heard on 1611 kHz. I did ask if he knew where the broadcast was coming from but he didn't say. This is his reply:

Free radio champion Dr Tim passes away

Very sad news comes from the SWCH website that free radio champion Dr Tim of Germany has passed away aged 72

There are probably not many free radio DXers who don't have a QSL in their collection from Radio Dr Tim, or one of the many other names he would broadcast under.

He was a champion of free radio who would be heard on the airwaves with his wide variety of musical programmes - from schlager to heavy rock to disco and, his biggest love, Dutch pop group BZN.

He was regularly heard on 48 and 76 metres, using many different names include Radio Disco Hell, Radio BZN, Radio Jingle Bells and Radio Bella Italia.

Werner, rest in peace and thanks for entertaining us over the years.

Dear FRS Friends,

On Sunday December 19th FRS-Holland will be on air with its annual festive December /end of the year broadcast. Details about times and frequencies will follow in the course of December.
