Channel 292 off air for two weeks

Friends of Radio Channel 292,

From March 8th until March 22nd we will be off air, due to preparations for our second power amplifier.  Exception: On March 22nd from 10 to 11 UTC you can listen to a new program for the DARC (German Amateur Radio Club) on 6070 kHz with 100 kW; perhaps we can start the 10 kW transmitter on the same day in the evening. During the next weeks we hope that we can increase power as planned.

Now, when summer comes and the skip zone during the night becomes smaller, a lot of listeners asked us tu run the station at nighttime, too. We would like to, but the problem is, that this would duplicate the energy costs, without creating any new income. And because these costs (not to mention all the other costs) are only covered for about 60% by rented airtime, this is not possible.

We don't want to ask for donations, but we can make you a proposal: Who wants to support us, can book sponsoring for broadcasts at night. This can be for a whole night with 12 hours, or 2 x 6 hours in the evening. For this we need 36 €; who can't afford this, may book 6 hours for 18 €. The sponsor can choose, if he wants in his time to hear our regular music program, or a re-broadcast of an Offshore Station of his choice. If he wants, his name will be published on our homepage and in our news mail, and in short spots during his programme, that we produce without any costs for him (for Offshore re-broadcasts only possible at the beginning, at the end and between  blocks of programming). Or, if wanted, completely anonymously.

We have plan try to reach more listeners with special quite high powered and directed transmission on 9600 kHz, 31mb next sunday 1st of March 2015 18:00-19:00 UTC. …

Our target is to reach areas of entire Europe, Mediterranean Sea area, Near-East, (Asia) and North-Africa. In any case it will be needed very good receivers and proper antennas for our listeners to get our signal. I wish everyhing will go right with these plans and our strange music will reach bigger areas and much bigger audience?? Let's see what's happens...

The Italian Group Free Wave organize for you, a radiophonic contest that will be on air on shortwaves QRG in Amplitude Modulation. The Game it is very simple.

Each free station will be on air on different moments and each one will be on air on his own QRG, transmitting a single part of a complete message in Italian and English, that is ever the same.
Your challenge is recreating the complete message !

All parts of the message start with a particular advising sound for all free stations.
The single part of the message will be transmitted following this schedule:

The Radio Uferlos QSL card came in the post after a follow-up email. On the back on the card he says he will be back on March 21-22. His power was 400W.

Pirate radio in the 1980s exhibition

Institute of Contemporary Arts update yesterday

"Shout Out! UK Pirate Radio in the 1980s", a new exhibition, will premiere at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent in February before travelling to the ICA  (in London) in May  and onwards to the Phoenix in Leicester in August.

Leicester July 23 to August 24. 

Creative Works announced today that funding has been granted for "a series of talks and workshops at the Institute of Contemporary Arts exploring the legacy of radio as a forum for radical thought and experimentation." presumably in connection with the exhibition.

Unlicensed religious broadcaster ordered off the air

The FCC has ordered an unlicensed California religious broadcaster, who sometimes broadcast on a frequency in the 40 meter phone band, to shut down his station

The ARRL report:
The FCC’s Los Angeles District Office on December 31 issued a Notice of Unlicensed Operation to Martin K. Elliott of Inyokern, California.
The FCC said it issued the Notice in response to a complaint of unlicensed operation on multiple HF frequencies, including some allocated to aeronautical stations.

The FCC said its agents used radio direction-finding techniques to confirm that signals on 6280 kHz and 11595 kHz were emanating from a residence located near Inyokern, and that property records indicated that Elliott was the current owner and resident.

“The Commission’s records show that no license was issued for operation of a station on either the frequencies of 6280 kHz or 11595 kHz at this location,” the FCC wrote. “Unlicensed operation of this radio station must be discontinued immediately.”

The pirate station, which identified itself as “YHWH,” was not cited for operating on Amateur Radio frequencies, although ARRL Official Observers had monitored the station in the past on 7185 kHz LSB.
One short-wave listener said the operator of YHWH changed frequencies regularly, and the station had not been heard on the ham bands for at least several months.

Greek and Serbian medium wave pirates

The Bulgarian DX blog has included some recordings of medium wave pirates from Serbia and Greece. These two countries are probably the most active on MW for pirate activity after the Netherlands. But unlike the Dutch, they don't seem to be interested in shortwave broadcasting.

Radio Revival testing new frequencies in mid-January

Update from the Sala transmitter site in Sweden:

In addition to the usual channels 3950 and 6065 kHz we have registered the following frequencies:

3970, 3980, 6035, 9815, 9875, 11745 and 11755 kHz.

We will be testing the other frequencies by mid-January. If you would like to book airtime during these tests, please contact Ronny at info (at) rock.x.se as soon as possible. For those wanting to reach the British Isles with a good signal, the 31 metre band is a good alternative.

We have two transmitters: one 5 kW rig which can broadcast in full AM and a 10 kW transmitter which can use A3H mode (LSB + carrier) or SSB. The 5 kW transmitter is primarily used in the 75 metre band.

Radio Mi Amigo news

Hello Shortwave Listeners,
to all of of you a happy new year and may all youre dreams come true in this year.

Radio Mi Amigo is testing at the beginning of the new year, another frequency:
Saturday, January 3, 2015 we will be on 6070 khz in the 49m band from 8-12 CET in the morning for 4 hours.
For those who have missed the offshore Radio Top 50 of 1974 during the Christmas program, we will be broadcasting the whole program here again.
For reception reports, please send an e-mail to: info@radiomiamigo.es. Everybody gets a nice QSL card.

We are also, of course, as always, on Sunday 4.1.2015 from 8-12 o'clock CET on 6005 and from 12 to 1600 CET on the 7310 with the normal programs.

RTE told to stop jamming pirate radio signals

Pirate radio stations caused quite the stir in 1984, creating a headache for both the RTÉ and the Government.

Unlicensed, pirate radio stations flourished in Ireland in the early 1980s — providing younger listeners an alternative to the state broadcaster.

Amongst them, were the Dublin stations of Sunshine Radio and Nova — which employed a full roster of presenters.

Jamming signals:
Due to pirate radio stations setting up shop on frequencies with no licence, the Government moved to impose further regulations on them. Meanwhile, RTÉ also attempted to put a stop to stations using illegal frequencies by putting out jamming signals.

There was cause for concern as the frequencies being used and the jamming signals impacted on phone lines, as well as frequencies used by hospitals and airports.

In state files released under the 30 year rule, a letter from Dublin City Council to the Government said they “deplored” the situation with pirate radio stations and was becoming a public safety matter as people could not reach doctors when the phones were out of use.

The Taoiseach at the time, the late Garret Fitzgerald, received a number of letters from members of the public, particularly young people, asking for the Government to intervene and begin granting more broadcasting licences.

Jack of WMR has updated his website:
"WMR and RADIO GSV are taking a break for now to try and find a new remote broadcast site. The last transmission for WMR was 23rd November. This was forced upon us due to web trolls that made broadcasting from the Radio GSV fixed location too risky. We had a good run though. It is just a shame that we probably will not make it on the airwaves this Christmas time as planned.

The programme on 23rd November featured a recording from Radio Woodstock from 1980, a Scottish pirate station that ran live from Falkirk for a few months, and took phone calls live on air."

Hobart Radio Int's Christmas special

 Hobart Radio writes: "I sent an email out to the group about a week or two ago requesting help relaying shows here from downunder in Australia. I'd like to say a big thank you and that is has been extraordinary to see such generosity to get shows on the air by different stations. Thank you! It is very exciting to see the hf band is no way nearing an end unlike many government broadcasters feel. Shortwave is not an ancient technology!

I have produced a shortwave broadcast-ready 2014 Christmas special which I would like to offer to any other pirates who would like a one-off different show to broadcast over the Christmas period.

It's out and ready for anyone to listen to - the 2014 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.

In this year's show we play music by John Lennon and Cascada, we travel back to Australia in 1958 via Doctor Who's spare TARDIS and see what Christmas means then. On our journey home we get a comical cultural dose of a hot summers Christmas in Australia - it's no winter wonderland downunder! And as we do every year we finish it off with Jiminy Cricket's Twas the night before Christmas."

DX programme looking for relay stations

 Message from Hobart Radio International:

"I am writing to see if a station is willing to form a partnership. I publish the popular DX Extra shortwave news show at hriradio.org getting around 500 listeners a month - 250 per show and growing.

"I am passionate about the pirate radio hobby and feature pirate radio logs including recordings on the show. Back in the mid 2000s Hobart Radio International was proudly being relayed by The baltic sea relay station and JRRI. Would a station consider relaying the show as a partnership so I could announce your station at the end of each show as well as promote it on the website with a direct link to your show, the link would also be displayed on every show published as it is included in the transcript. I am even open to the possibility of promos advertising the radio station.

I am very passionate about the shortwave hobby, dxing to hear new and exciting content on shortwave but really feel disconnected with hobbyists who used to tune into Hobart Radio International between 2005-2008. It would be great to once again reach a European audience and maybe even an American audience. Sadly commercial stations cost a lot making it hard for independant small stations to get out into the radiowaves."

Dutch pirate in FM on 27 mHZ

I was tuning around 27 megs on the Twente SDR when I heard this Dutch station on 27125 kHz in FM mode. Very strong signal so I guess broadcasting from the Twente area. I sent a  clip to Sluwe Vos who thinks it might have been 27 mHz amateur relaying an FM pirate. I have heard Dutch pirates on this band before.

Here is the 2:40 minute recording I made on November 21 at 2120 UTC. Any other suggestions welcome.
