New shortwave station Euro Radio to begin broadcasting in August

An new station called Euro Radio 6205 is due to start broadcasting on August 1 with 2kW.  On its
Facebook page it says: "Get your programmes and podcasts on air to a pan european audience with Euro Radio. our rates are the lowest in Europe!. The more airtime you buy the cheaper it gets! Email for details euroradio@gmx.com."

Is it a pirate or a licensed station - it is not clear?

Pirate radio operator fined nearly £4,000

A pirate radio boss has been ordered to pay almost £4,000 for running an illegal station and helping others with broadcasts.

Ricky Llewellyn, who runs drum and bass station Distinct FM, also allowed Hot 92, Irie UK and Sting FM to make broadcasts from his server.

The 29-year-old from Bilston appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court this week charged with managing a station knowing unauthorised broadcasts were being made and helping with the running of the other three stations. He pleaded guilty to all charges, claiming he wanted to provide a service to people who had no access to the type of music he played.

Pirate radio clampdown in Hackney, London

Hackney Homes is clamping down on illegal radio stations across the borough; with 29 pirate radio masts and transmitters removed from estates in the last year.

In partnership with communications regulator Ofcom, the Anti-social behaviour and Estate Safety team recently dismantled a pirate radio mast from a rooftop on Summit Estate, Upper Clapton. Following reports from residents, the team identified the illegal mast and cables which were situated on top of the chimney and down the air vents of the block.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Philip Glanville, said: “Surprisingly this type of activity is still quite common and can have an impact on the lives of our residents. We will continue to take a ‘zero tolerance approach’ against illegal pirate radio operators by prosecuting those individuals found guilty of this criminal offence.”

Borderhunter Summer Meeting 2015 information

Hi Free Radio and pirate fans!

It's already time for another one! From the 3rd to the 5th of July 2015, everyone of distinction in the free radio scene meets once again – both listeners and stations! On this particular weekend, it’s provisionally planned that the next Borderhunter summer meeting (well-known and well-loved across Europe) will take place in the first weekend of July. Only those who already know about this fantastic meeting, know what the home stayers miss.

As in every year, the question of where to stay overnight is no problem! You can stay in a car, tent, caravan, hotel, B&B or at the accommodation at the camp site (complete with beds, but bring a sleeping bag) – everything can be brought along, as everything is provided for. The meeting begins officially on Saturday, as usual. In addition, every year many hobbyists travel on Friday, which the boss of the organisation also has no problem with. Everyone is always most cordially welcome at any time!

You can safely leave your picnic basket at home with your mother – the selection of meals and drinks is so vast, that you will be a little bit heavier when you return home on Sunday! And all this and more at affordable prices. However in order not to drive the meeting organisation into financial ruin, there is a small contribution of 2 Euros per person which is obligatory.

Radio Borderhunter will organise a meeting for friends of the free radio and pirate hobby, that is not only unique, but will also remain unsurpassed – that we promise all hobbyists! In order that we can plan better, we request that you let us know when you are coming, in advance if possible, as we want to make sure that we have enough food beforehand, for example.

Cambridge 105 QSL

I received a QSL card in the post this week from Cambridge 105 which was relayed via Channel 292 on 6070 kHz on April 3. The special broadcast was aboard the Riverboat Georgina celebrating the era of pirate radio. They also sent a leaflet about the station which is a low-powered community radio station broadcasting on FM to Cambridge - a famous university city in the east of England.

New book about London's pirate pioneers

London’s Pirate Pioneers tells the story of the capital’s pirate radio stations and the people who helped change the British broadcasting system.

From the early hobbyist operations of the 1960s to the big commercial enterprises of the 1980s. From suburban bedrooms to open fields to urban tower blocks. From hippies to soul boys to ravers. The book weaves together a year-by-year account of the developments in London’s radio with the stories of the key stations. It explores the political, social, musical and technological changes that were to influence each stage in their evolution.

Photos from every era take you behind the scenes to see the DJs and engineers at work and the book gathers together flyers and promos from many of the leading stations.

Stephen Hebditch was editor of TX / Radio Today, the most popular pirate radio magazine in eighties London, and has continued documenting the pirates at amfm.org.uk.

80s pirate is back as legal station

A popular pirate radio station from the 1980s era in Bradford (West Yorkshire) is making a comeback - but this time it's going legal. 

Two original DJs from PCR (Paradise City Radio) are behind the new-sound People's City Radio, going on air on the web. 

From an idea sketched out on the back of a cigarette packet four weeks ago, PCR's resurrection has been "astronomical," says Marvyn Browning, 39, who was just 15 and supposedly swatting for exams when he used to DJ for the old station from a friend's flat in Green Lane, Manningham, telling his mother he was stopping out at his sister's. 

The new PCR is already up and running, it is on seven days a week and already has 22 live shows. The rest is on a loop and the station has signed up DJs not just from Bradford but Manchester, London, Belgium, Serbia and The Bronx in New York.

New FCC enforcement chief's goal is no pirates

In the USA the new FCC Bureau Enforcement Chief has been setting out his plans which includes clearing the American airwaves of pirates.

He said: “We need to think about when we take action that [the pirate] is actually off the air and things to prevent pirates ever getting on the air. We want to get to a world where there are no pirates on the airwaves,” said LeBlanc, who added he’s looking forward to working with NAB and broadcasters on that."

Laser Hot Hits is 25 years old today

Happy birthday to Laser Hot Hits which began broadcasting on FM in the London area on April 16 1990. Twenty five years later it is still going strong, broadcasting nightly on 4026 kHz with various other shortwave, medium wave and FM relays.

Some DXers might remember when they used to broadcast on 75, 48, 41 and the 32 metre bands with 6220 being a regular frequency until Mystery Radio laid claim to 6220.

Cambridge 105 & Chelmsford Calling Easter shortwave relays

As reported earlier UK community radio station Cambridge 105 has a pirate radio day 0900-2100 Good Friday April 3 from the MV Georgina on the River Cam, schedule now up, each hour looks at different years. They will be on 105FM, online and 6070 shortwave via the Channel 292 transmitter.

Radio Latino QSL

A quick reply from Italian station Radio Latino. In his reply the operator said: "Radio Latino has been broadcasting irregularly since 2006 with low power (50 watts p.e.p.) from central Italy. You have been listening to one of the first test trasmission of 2015 with the new transmitter (500 watts p.e.p), but we still have to set up correctly the audio section of the station (that's why you heard some overmodulation). The antenna at the moment is a inverted V dipole working from 7530 to 7610 khz.
In the next weeks I should be quite active from 7530 up to 7610 (main frequency will be 7540) during evening and night and, during 2015, we hope to be on air regularly on a daily basis, with one hour program."

Thanks a lot for this enormous feedback on our transmission last weekend in the 31m band !!!
The weather conditions have been not that good on Saturday, but even better on Sunday. All of your reception reports will get a QSL Card via post within the next days, as promised. Some of you got several questions, I will try to get an answer to the most important one: The transmitter side was in Germany at Kall in the Eifel with 1 kw of power. Everybody will get a mention on the shows next Sunday, and over the Easter-weekend in the programs of Paul Newman, Peter de Wit and Cpt. Kord

Last week a special programme marking the 40th anniversary of Radio Milano International was broadcast by several Italian stations on shortwave and medium wave. One of the relays was by Enterprise Radio and here is his special QSL.

KBC to broadcast daily on medium wave

"We are delighted to announce that from the 1st June 2015, KBC will be heard daily on medium wave. We will broadcast on 1602 kHz between 07.00 and 19.00 CET from transmitters aboard the LV Jenni Baynton.

Our Sunday shortwave transmissions will continue on 6095 and we will add an extra hour onto 7375 transmission.

"To facilitate these latest changes, our Saturday 6095 transmissions will end on Saturday March 28th but all regular shows will be maintained on a new KBC Internet stream which will be available online 24/7. Also, look out later this year for KBC on DAB+

"We hope you enjoy our new outlets and will join KBC on MW, SW, DAB+ and Online. Check out our website kbcradio.eu and our FB page facebook.com/TheMightyKBc for all the latest news."

Just to clarify: KBC will be replacing Radio Waddenzee on 1602 from 1 June. There will be no change to Radio Seagull, which will continue to broadcast on 1602 at 1900-0700 Dutch time. Later this year, both stations will share a channel on the regional DAB+ mutiplex. Radio Seagull will continue 24h on the internet.

New Irish station CBSFM testing on shortwave

Alan Gale writes on the British DX Club Yahoo group: "CBSFM International from Ireland are currently testing live on 7820 kHz. Presenter said their service will launch on the 17th of March, and they were asking for reception reports on their signal. They will be closing down at 1800 UTC today, I think. Very strong signal here in the nw of England.

"Power of Rock" on 9600 kHz, 31mb sunday 8th March 2015, 18:00-19:00 UTC using omnidirectional HQ-antenna to a bit larger listening area.
