I'll post more information about what's in this book tomorrow, but I can say that it's 178 pages and will contain an audio CD with clips from 70 different stations.

International postage keeps increasing at ridiculous rates, so I'll check on those costs soon. The last I checked, they got rid of international book rate and now it's something like 9 or $10 to ship to Canada and something like $12 to $15 to send to the rest of the world."

Greek and Serbian medium wave pirates

The Bulgarian DX blog has included some recordings of medium wave pirates from Serbia and Greece. These two countries are probably the most active on MW for pirate activity after the Netherlands. But unlike the Dutch, they don't seem to be interested in shortwave broadcasting.

Radio Revival testing new frequencies in mid-January

Update from the Sala transmitter site in Sweden:

In addition to the usual channels 3950 and 6065 kHz we have registered the following frequencies:

3970, 3980, 6035, 9815, 9875, 11745 and 11755 kHz.

We will be testing the other frequencies by mid-January. If you would like to book airtime during these tests, please contact Ronny at info (at) rock.x.se as soon as possible. For those wanting to reach the British Isles with a good signal, the 31 metre band is a good alternative.

We have two transmitters: one 5 kW rig which can broadcast in full AM and a 10 kW transmitter which can use A3H mode (LSB + carrier) or SSB. The 5 kW transmitter is primarily used in the 75 metre band.

Radio Mi Amigo news

Hello Shortwave Listeners,
to all of of you a happy new year and may all youre dreams come true in this year.

Radio Mi Amigo is testing at the beginning of the new year, another frequency:
Saturday, January 3, 2015 we will be on 6070 khz in the 49m band from 8-12 CET in the morning for 4 hours.
For those who have missed the offshore Radio Top 50 of 1974 during the Christmas program, we will be broadcasting the whole program here again.

We are also, of course, as always, on Sunday 4.1.2015 from 8-12 o'clock CET on 6005 and from 12 to 1600 CET on the 7310 with the normal programs.

RTE told to stop jamming pirate radio signals

Pirate radio stations caused quite the stir in 1984, creating a headache for both the RTÉ and the Government.

Unlicensed, pirate radio stations flourished in Ireland in the early 1980s — providing younger listeners an alternative to the state broadcaster.

Amongst them, were the Dublin stations of Sunshine Radio and Nova — which employed a full roster of presenters.

Jamming signals:
Due to pirate radio stations setting up shop on frequencies with no licence, the Government moved to impose further regulations on them. Meanwhile, RTÉ also attempted to put a stop to stations using illegal frequencies by putting out jamming signals.

There was cause for concern as the frequencies being used and the jamming signals impacted on phone lines, as well as frequencies used by hospitals and airports.

In state files released under the 30 year rule, a letter from Dublin City Council to the Government said they “deplored” the situation with pirate radio stations and was becoming a public safety matter as people could not reach doctors when the phones were out of use.

The Taoiseach at the time, the late Garret Fitzgerald, received a number of letters from members of the public, particularly young people, asking for the Government to intervene and begin granting more broadcasting licences.

Jack of WMR has updated his website:
"WMR and RADIO GSV are taking a break for now to try and find a new remote broadcast site. The last transmission for WMR was 23rd November. This was forced upon us due to web trolls that made broadcasting from the Radio GSV fixed location too risky. We had a good run though. It is just a shame that we probably will not make it on the airwaves this Christmas time as planned.

The programme on 23rd November featured a recording from Radio Woodstock from 1980, a Scottish pirate station that ran live from Falkirk for a few months, and took phone calls live on air."

Hobart Radio Int's Christmas special

 Hobart Radio writes: "I sent an email out to the group about a week or two ago requesting help relaying shows here from downunder in Australia. I'd like to say a big thank you and that is has been extraordinary to see such generosity to get shows on the air by different stations. Thank you! It is very exciting to see the hf band is no way nearing an end unlike many government broadcasters feel. Shortwave is not an ancient technology!

I have produced a shortwave broadcast-ready 2014 Christmas special which I would like to offer to any other pirates who would like a one-off different show to broadcast over the Christmas period.

It's out and ready for anyone to listen to - the 2014 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.

In this year's show we play music by John Lennon and Cascada, we travel back to Australia in 1958 via Doctor Who's spare TARDIS and see what Christmas means then. On our journey home we get a comical cultural dose of a hot summers Christmas in Australia - it's no winter wonderland downunder! And as we do every year we finish it off with Jiminy Cricket's Twas the night before Christmas."

Basically we offer the possibility to spread your very own personal New Year (December) Greetings or musical request by way of the ionosphere. We will read them out in our 6 hour broadcast on the final 2014 Sunday. You can dedicate your greetings to anybody or anything . It's up to you!

 Message from Hobart Radio International:

"I am writing to see if a station is willing to form a partnership. I publish the popular DX Extra shortwave news show at hriradio.org getting around 500 listeners a month - 250 per show and growing.

"I am passionate about the pirate radio hobby and feature pirate radio logs including recordings on the show. Back in the mid 2000s Hobart Radio International was proudly being relayed by The baltic sea relay station and JRRI. Would a station consider relaying the show as a partnership so I could announce your station at the end of each show as well as promote it on the website with a direct link to your show, the link would also be displayed on every show published as it is included in the transcript. I am even open to the possibility of promos advertising the radio station.

I am very passionate about the shortwave hobby, dxing to hear new and exciting content on shortwave but really feel disconnected with hobbyists who used to tune into Hobart Radio International between 2005-2008. It would be great to once again reach a European audience and maybe even an American audience. Sadly commercial stations cost a lot making it hard for independant small stations to get out into the radiowaves."

Dutch pirate in FM on 27 mHZ

I was tuning around 27 megs on the Twente SDR when I heard this Dutch station on 27125 kHz in FM mode. Very strong signal so I guess broadcasting from the Twente area. I sent a  clip to Sluwe Vos who thinks it might have been 27 mHz amateur relaying an FM pirate. I have heard Dutch pirates on this band before.

Here is the 2:40 minute recording I made on November 21 at 2120 UTC. Any other suggestions welcome.

Dutch medium wave pirate raided

SWC Holland reports: "Today Monday 24-11-2014 we received the message that the Medium Wave pirate Galaxy was raided. The raid was on Sunday afternoon 23-11-2014, time unknown.
The frequency of Galaxy was 1512.0 kHz in the medium wave band. His location was Schagen in N Holland. No further information available from this Telecom Agengy action.
This message could not yet confirmed by fellow pirates.

It was also reported that Telecom Agency was in the street at Black Panther on this Sunday.
The two pirates both live in the same province.

Radio Caroline & Manx Radio collaborate for week of special programmes

Special programmes scheduled to start tomorrow according to the Radio Caroline website (and include overnight relays of Caroline on 1368 kHz next week, so get out the MW loop!):

2014 is the 50th Anniversary of both Radio Caroline and Manx Radio. To celebrate we are collaborating on a series of programmes to go out on both stations between Saturday 15th and Thursday 20th November.

Shortly after commencing broadcasts in March 1964 Radio Caroline sailed its biggest ship North – broadcasting as it went – and dropped anchor in Ramsey Bay off the Isle of Man in order to beam its powerful signal into Ireland, Scotland and the North of England.

Nobody ever expected it to happen … but 50 years on and Manx Radio has forgiven its cheeky competitor, and neighbour, and invited a unique partnership for one week, in order to look back "50 years on".

Tape Crackers: A Personal Journey Through London's Pirate Radio Stations

Michael Finch owns what must well be the biggest archive of pirate radio tapes in the country. Like many who tuned into the pirate stations that saturated London’s FM bandwidth in the 90s, Finch recorded his favourite broadcasts on tape – not for posterity but to “share the wealth”, as he puts it, with his schoolmates. Few though can have had the dedication of Finch, who continued making recordings for over a decade.

£800 fine for man caught running pirate radio station

A father-of-two has been left with a court bill of more than £800 after he admitted running an illegal music radio station from his Northamptonshire home.

Thomas Furniss, from Queen Street in Rushden, said he started broadcasting because of his skills in electronics and was not interested in music or becoming a DJ.

The former Crystal Electronics employee, who was representing himself, said: “It was just a hobby at first because I have always been interested in how electronics work, and I found out on the internet how to do it. I didn’t realise how serious an offence it was.”

Furniss, aged 27, was arrested after someone made a complaint to Ofcom in June about the pirate radio station, named “XS Radio”, which ran from February to July this year. The station was traced to his home in an investigation which cost almost £3,000.

During a hearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Furniss pleaded guilty to managing, financing, operating and running an unauthorised broadcasting station from his home.

He was given a £280 fine, ordered to pay court costs of £500 and a victim surcharge of £28, and received an order for his laptop and transmitting devices to be forfeited.

We will celebrate during all this month of November our 31st birthday.

We will operate this year with only our low power txs of  around 20 watts on several bands 48 , 41 & 26mb with a special QSL on each band. If you reach all bands another QSL will be set up for you as a GOLD QSL .

We will operate on 41 & 26 mb from Sat November 8th until Tuesday November 11th afternoon. We can just invite you to keep listening.

FRS Holland to repeat broadcast

Dear FRS Friends,

Last Sunday propagation conditions were not the best (lots of static noise). On top of that there was a total fade out on SW just before 12 CET and it took more than 2 hours before the signal had fully recovered. And if that's not enough...our afternoon stream was affected by a technical break.
Taking all this into consideration, we have decided to give it another try next Sunday November 3rd, same times, same frequencies! Despite the low power, 9301 kHz was doing fairly well last Sunday.
Keep an eye on it as it was sometimes stronger than 7700!

On Sunday November 3rd FRS-Holland will be on air  with a full broadcast (repeat Oct. 26th) between 08:52- 15:00 UTC. Frequencies will be 7700// 9300 kHz.

Internet Stream
That same day between 14:52- 21:00 UTC/15:52- 22.00 CEST will see a full repeat on the internet. Check on your computer < http://nednl.net:8000/frsh.m3u >.  

QSLs
There is a backlog as far as QSL cards is concerned. Next few weeks we will try to anser all mails/
letters which haven't been handled so far. That's a promise!

Shortwave’s Newest Broadcaster Global 24 to take to the air

Global 24 Radio LLC announced today that its inaugural broadcast will go live at 7:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31 (0000 UTC November 1), with a line-up of new and well-known programs and around-the clock English language programming. The broadcast can be heard 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 9395 kHz on WRMI broadcasting from Okeechobee, Florida.

 “We’re very excited about launching Global 24 and the important contributions it will make to shortwave radio listening – as both a medium worth preserving and a vital part of the modern media mix for so many listeners around the world,” said Phil Workman, general manager of Global 24. “Our broadcast will appeal to dedicated shortwave listeners (SWL) all over the world looking for breaking news, opinion and music.”

Magic confusion

Long-running Dutch shortwave pirate Magic AM has been getting emails for a new shortwave station, also calling itself Magic - which is thought to be from the UK. He has warned people he will not be sending them on!

The Dutch Magic AM has gone onto Twitter to say: "We are getting a lot of e-mails and snailmail for a station calling himself MAGIC int. in our mailbox and P.O.Box lately. Please note that these e-mails and snailmail will not be forwarded. We are MAGIC AM, active on shortwave since 1996, and we do not know the people behind the other station,using our name & running non-stop music on SW.We have been on air since 1996 & will stay MAGIC AM forever."
