London FM pirates raided

Three people have been arrested and twenty two illegal transmitters have been seized in an operation involving Ofcom, the Metropolitan Police and the London Boroughs of Hackney, Haringey, Tower Hamlets and Islington.

20 illegal radio stations have been taken off the air between February 6 and February 16.

Ofcom estimate that there are over 150 illegal radio stations operating in the UK, with half of those broadcasting across London and thr South East.

Robert Thelen-Bartholomew, Director of Field Operations at Ofcom, said: "Illegal broadcasters can cause serious interference to safety-of-life services such as the fire brigade and air traffic control, as well as legitimate radio stations. Ofcom takes swift and firm action to remove these illegal stations from the air. We work closely with local authorities to ensure that this problem is tackled at source for the benefit of the community."

Actors come aboard for pirate radio film

The BBC website reports that British actors Kenneth Branagh and Rhys Ifans have joined the cast of Richard Curtis's film about pirate radio DJs broadcasting on a ship in the 1970s.

The Boat That Rocked is written and directed by Curtis (of Four Weddings & A Funeral fame) and filming starts on March 3. Read more about it at:

On 1st February it is 11 years since we started our loved radio station, Radio Cochiguaz.

We will therefore in the coming days/weeks make some transmissions for all our friends around the world.

Our main transmitter has a technical problem we haven't solved yet. Another transmitter is being prepared to operate on 11430 kHz SSB but this is still not operable yet.

A third transmitter is prepared to be operated shortly on 6305 kHz. Thus, this month we will make some broadcasts, both from here in the Andes as well through friends in Europe.

We will later inform more about the schedule. Probable frequencies will be:6305 kHz (from the Andes) and 6290 or 6307 kHz (from Europe).

Britain Radio Int remembers...

After the sad news ref: Colin Dixon passing away very suddenly last weekend BRI will be on air with a 60 min programme to reflect over the past week or so with some of our thoughts along with audio clips to play, and of course a selection of music.

We must also mention about the sad news of Stefan Dietl. We hope to use 6255khz for this broadcast on Sunday starting at 10am UK time, it will also be running on our webstream, being repeated from 11am then followed by Colin Dixon's final show, thanks to Laser Hot Hits.

Pxs will be presented by Jan van Dijk, Mike Anderson & Peter Verbruggen.

Mike Anderson will present his debut show DX-Welle in German.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Many thanks for all your support for this blog over the past year. It has been a good year for free radio with plenty of activity on 48 metres (and elsewhere) keeping things interesting.

Nice to hear Laser back to 24 hour operation (even though propagation has not been too kind) and some great programmes from Weekend Music Radio.

The Dutch stations always there to keep us entertained and keeping the free radio flag flying.

I wonder what 2008 will bring?

I know the moderators are busy people with lives to lead but could someone go in every day and just clear this rubbish off. Also don't click on these postings - it will just encourage the spammers to post more if they think people are looking at it.

Even better would be to find a solution to stopping it altogether.
